Israel Day Proclamation Expected
For Anniversary Rally on April 30
Detroit and 'the State of Michigan are expected to repeat the
practice instituted last year, on the occasion of the first anniver-
sary of the state of Israel, by proclaiming April 30—the date set
for Detroit Jewry's celebration—as Israel Day.
A call has gone forth to all organizations from the Zionist
Council and the Jewish Community Council to hold April 30 open
for the event to be held at the
State Fair Coliseum and to mo- bration arrangements commit-

The joint committee an-
nounced that a special feature of
the April 30 rally will be the
presentation of a flag on behalf
of the community, to the Ameri-
can-Israeli Veterans Organiza-
tion. This group, composed, lo-
cally, of Detroiters who took
part in the fighting in Israel,
will participate in the massing
of colors and in the patriotic ex-
ercises which will be part of
the huge event.
The flag to be presented car-
ries the "Machal" inscription
and is the banner that has been
adopted by the Israel veterans.
Arrangements for the opening
ceremonies and for the presen-
tation of the colors are under
the chairmanship of Philip Can-
tor, who is in charge of veter-
ans' groups participating in the
celebration.
Mrs. Julian Tobias, secretary
of the Zionist Council, was se-
lected to handle platform dec-
orations at the affair.
The committee also formulat-
ed plans at its last meeting for
transportation of school chil-
dren to the Fair Grounds. Fa-
cilities will be provided for chil-
dren unaccompanied by their
parents to be brought to the
Coliseum in specially chartered
buses. Return transportation to
several central points will also
be provided.

Back from a three-week visit
in Israel, Maurice H. Zackheim,
well known Detroit leader, for-
iner president of the Zionist
Organization of D e t r o i t, the
United Hebrew Schools and Con-
gregation Shaarey Zedek, spoke
with enthusiasm about Mizrachi
schools in the Jewish State.
Mr. Zackheim said that his
primary interest on his present
visit was to study the school
systems in the country. While he
was deeply impressed with all
efforts at advancing Jewish
learning and with the manner
in which Hebrew became a liv-
ing tongue, he said that his per-
sonal view is that the Mizrachi
schools are among the best he
has seen anywhere.
Comparing his present visit
with the one 22 years ago, when
he visited Palestine together
with Mrs. Zackheim, Mrs. Isaac
Shetzer and the late Mr. Shetz-
er, Mr. Zackheim said that it is
impossible to recognize the land.
"It has changed and continues
to change," he said.
