To Israel 'in the Thousands'

JERUSALEM —Jews in the
United States were urged to
emigrate to Israel "in the thou-
sands" in a Passover message is-
sued here by Israel's Chief Rabbi
Dr. Isaac Herzog. The Chief
Rabbi warned that the danger
for Israel is still not over and
appealed to the Jews in the
democratic countries to do their
utmost for the -Jewish state.
"From the DP camps in Eur-
ope, from Yemen and from
North Africa, our brethren
stream to Israel in the tens of
thousands," the message said.
"We hope that they will soon
some from Iraq, the country of
our first exile. You, the Jews
who know and enjoy freedom in
the United States and in other
countries should come at least
in the thousands."
Numerous American Jews ar-
rived here by air and sea to
celebrate Passover in Israel.
They include American members
of the Zionist Actions Commit-
tee who are gathering to parti-
cipate in the session of the
group which opens here April 19.
Among the arrivals are a dele-
gation of 29 members of the JeW-
ish National Workers Alliance of
America, Dr. Emanuel Neumann,
former president of the Zionist
Organization of America, and
Dr. Louis Hendin, president of
the Yiddish Writers Union in
New York.

Bevin's Erroneous
Statement Corrected
LONDON—A formal correction
of the erroneous statement last
week by Foreign Secretary Er-
nest Bevin that the original UN
partition resolution assigned
Haifa to Arab Palestine was
made in Commons Monday night
by Foreign Under-Secretary Er-
nest Davies.
The Under-Secretary declared
that his superior "regretted the
obvious error" and added that
the relevant section of Mr. Bev-
in's statement should have read
"this place—Haifa—was allocat-
ed - to the Jews under the United
Nations resolution. The Arabs
did not accept this. The Jews
proceeded to take it over and
Iraq then cut off the oil."
Britain and Israel signed a
financial agreement here under
which all British assets in Israel
arising out of the termination of
the Palestine Mandate—with the
exception of minor holdings in
Jerusalem—will pass into the
ownership of the Israel Govern-
ment.
The agreement was signed by
Sir James Crombie on behalf of
the United Kingdom and by
David Horowitz, director-general
of Israel's Ministry of Finance,
on behalf of Israel. Twenty-four
other members comprising the
British and Israel delegations
affixed their signatures to the
document. An official announce-
ment said that the details of
the pact will be published "in
due course."
(In Tel Aviv it was reported
that the actual financial trans-
actions concluded in London
were limited to the transfer to
London of 1,118,000 pounds now
held in Israel banks and the
payment, over a 15-year period,
of about 3,000,000 pounds to the
former Mandatory Government.
The agreement also provides
that Israel is to pay pensions in
local currency to former British
officials now residing in the
Jewish state, with a ceiling of
200,000 pounds annually on the
pension payments.)

899 Romanian Jews
On Their Way to Israel
BUCHAREST—The Romanian
transport S. S. Transylvania
sailed from the port of Con-
stanza for Haifa Monday night
carrying 899 Jewish immigrants.
The vessel also carried David
Giladi, head of the passport di-
vision in the Israel legation in
Bucharest who is returning to
Israel following the completion
of his one-year term of office.

Jewish Agency to Seek
Definition of Its Status •
NEW YORK (JTA)—The Jew-
ish Agency will seek a clear-cut
definition of its official status,

I duties and jurisdiction from the
Israel Government at the Zion-
ist Actions Committee which
opens its session in Jerusalem
on April 19, Dr. Nahum Gold-
mann, chairman of the Ameri-
can section of the Agency, de-
clared on the eve of his depar-
ture for the meetings.
Along with the clarification of
its functions, which have not
been agreed upon since Septem-
ber, 1947, the Actions Committee
will discuss the serious problem
of the mass immigration into
Israel this year of Jews from
Iraq. This unprecedented new
immigration which may smash
previous budgetary calculations
will pose a stupendous problem
of financing, Dr. Goldmann said.

N. Y. Seeks Legal Action Against

Bowling Congress' 'Caucasian Rule'

Shoeshine

Supreme Court Justice Meier
Steinbrink, national chairman of
the Anti-Defamation League,
hailed the action of State At-
torney General Nathaniel L.
Goldstein in seeking a temporary
injunction against the American
Bowling Congress.
"We suggest that instead of
exhausting itself in countering
the State's legal action, the
American Bowling Congress
might better apply its energieS
to cleaning up its un-American
practices," Judge Steinbrink de-
clared. "The American Bowling
Congress has an opportunity at
its annual meeting in May, not
only to safeguard its legal posi-
tion, but to re-establish itself in
the best traditions of American
life by eliminating the obnox-
