Jewish Ritual Problems
`Acute' in South Africa

JOHANNESBURG, ( J T A ) —
Chief Rabbi Israel Brodie of the
British Empire was welcomed at
the airport here by representa-
tives of the South African Board
of Jewish Deputies and other
leading Jewish organizations and
institutions.
At a meeting with representa-
tives of the Jewish press, Rabbi
Brodie, who has just completed
a tour of Kenya and Rhodesia,
reported that the question of
shechita—Jewish ritual slaugh-
ter—was "acute" in these areas,
as was the problem of Sabbath
observance. The British Chief
Rabbi said that the shortage of
trained rabbis in outlying areas
in the British Commonwealth
could be met by the institution
of the system of "rotating rab-
bis" among small communities.

wag announced at the annual
installation of officers held at
the Henry Hudson Hotel.
Col. Elyachar disclosed that
the organization had joined with
two other groups—the Ameri-
can Friends of the Hebrew Uni-
versity and the American Com-
mittee for the Weizmann Insti-
tute of Science, in order to ad-
vance science, technology and
higher learning in Israel. The
new group will be known tenta-
tively as the American Commit-
tee for the U.I.T.—University,
Institute, Technion.

Today's eight - day Passover
observance starts the same day,
the 14th of Nisan, that Biblical
Israelites began their "Feast of
the Unleavened Bread."

Lead Memento Spurs
`Genocide' Author On

Newly-arrived DP children join in the traditional search
for the last remnants of "chometz" in preparation for Passover
in New York City's Hotel Marseilles, where United Service for
New Americans maintains its national reception shelter. The
work of USNA, which this year will help resettle 25,000 home-
less Jews in the United States, is financed by the UJA.

Prof. Rafael Lemkin, who was
nominated for the Nobel Peace
Prize for authoring the UN con-
vention against genocide, still
has a bullet in his leg, a mem-
ento from the battle of Warsaw,
reports New York Post column-
ist Leonard Lyons.
Lemkin found that long arg-
uments for the genocide pact
weren't as effective in getting
the delegates' votes as was his
simple statement: "There were
45 in my family. Because of
Genocide I alone remain."
Once, he heard W in s t on
Churchill broadcast about the
Nazi destruction of races. "We
are faced with a crime so bar-
baric that it is nameless," said
Churchill.
That's when Lemkin originat-
ed the word for it, "Genocide."

Rabbi Adler Lists
Program Principles
For Jewish Groups

"A Jewish organization that
does not promote Jewish under-
standing, interest, responsibility
and fellowship has no justifica-
tion for being," declares Rabbi
Morris Adler in his column "May
I Have a Word with You?" in
the Shaarey Zedek Recorder.
Rabbi Adler states that he
has had an enthusiastic response
to a previous column in which
he deplored the non-Jewish,
non 7 cultural programs often
presented by Jewish organiza-
tions in an effort to get a large
crowd to attend their meetings.
The response to his column
led Rabbi Adler to list a series
of general propositions for Jew-
ish organization programming.
He reminds organization work-
ers that "we too often under-
estimate the taste and standards
of our average audiences," and
points out further that "men do
not join Jewish organizations
out of a desire to escape Juda-
ism."
"Numbers are not the decisive
criterion of a successful meet-
ing," Rabbi Adler emphasizes.
He adds that "no entertain-
ment program and no sports
program we offer at our meet-
ings can compete with those of-
fered by the professional the-
ater or athletic teams."
"There is both a need and a
desire for programs of richer
and more Jewish content," the
rabbi's article states.
