new book, "In

Meyer Levin dealt mainly
with Jewish life, reveals that
there is an informal numerus

and that at times
writers are even discouraged
from presenting characters with
Jewish names.
The author of "The Old
Bunch," considered an out-
standing novel of Jewish Amer-,
ican life, tells how pressure was
put upon him more than once,,
to turn his Jewish characters
into non-Jews, and how one
magazine publisher, though
himself Jewish, banned the
author's Jewish name from his
publications.
The culmination of this real-
life story, a kind of "gentle-
man's agreement" without the
sugar coating, is the fact that

down by more than one pub-

Report Secret
Trial of Israel
Army Sergeant
a EL AVIV, (JTA)-The secret
military trial of a former Israel
Army sergeant charged with
disclosing military secrets and
delivering military documents
to "unauthorized persons" was
reported in the evening news-
paper Maariv.
The newspaper says that. the
court martial, of Sgt. Malach
Reicher, is being conducted
"somewhere in Israel." Reicher
is described as a recent immi-
grant from Romania who is
known for his "Communist ten-
dencies." The "unauthorized per-
sons" are believed to be two
Communist leaders recently ar-
rested on charges of illegal pos-
session of secret military infor-
mation and documents.
(The Moscow Literary Gazette)
according to a dispatch receiv-
ed by the New York Times from
the Soviet capital, described Is-
rael Foreign Minister Shaaret as
a "malicious babbler" and a
"liar." The journal said that
the Jewish state accepted "en-
slaving conditions" under terms
of the American $100,000,000
loan. Israel's foreign policy was
described as "cringing before
Washington.")
it was "too Jewish." Other. pub-
lishers, accepting the book, sug-
gested that the author take out
those sections which dealt with
such habits in the publishing
field. Levin, determined that
this question, among others,
should for once be aired, de-
cided to have "In Search" pub-
lished intact in Paris.
"In Search" deals not only
with these factors in -a writer's
life, but with the entire Jewish
story as witnessed by the re-
porter-novelist in his career.
Meyer Levin was in 'Palestine
during the 1929 riots, the 1937
disorders, the 1946 resistance;
he was the sole war correspond-
ent assigned to the Jewish story
in Europe, and after the war
he filmed the entire illegal
route from Warsaw to Israel. His
summation is an ,effort to find
a workable ethic through his
Jewish experience, squarely fac-
ing the problems of loyalty and
of folk-identification that con-
front the Jew outside Israel to-
day.
"In Search" is being published
by the Authors' Press, 46 Quai
Henri IV, Paris, and will be
available in the United States
in May.

Avowed Anti-Semites
LONDON, ( J TA ) -Two anti-
Semites were acquitted by a
jury here of having caused a
public disturbance last month
by throwing smoke bombs du ring
the showing of the American
film, "Sword in the Desert,'
which depicts the fight between
the Jews and the British prior
to the establishment of Israel.
The film was subsequently ban-
ned in London.
One defendent, Bertram Duke
Pile, is a notorious London
streetcorner speaker against
Jews-. He has been arrested sev-
eral times on charges of dis-
turbing the peace and is at
present on probation. A former
member of Sir Oswald Mosley's
Union Movement, he left the
fascist movement because be
wanted it to be more aggressive-
ly anti-Jewish.
The other defendant, John
Cook, told the court that he too
had been a member of the Union
Movement. He added that he
was anti-Jewish, but " not vio-.
lently."
