Welts' Son-in-Law Writes New Novel

Robert Smith, son-in-law of
Mr. and Mrs. Melville S. Welt of
Detroit, is the a u t h o r of a
fourth full-length book, "One
Winter in Boston," a novel, just
published by Simon and Schus-
ter.
His other works are : "Hotel
an the Lake," a powerful novel
dealing with anti-Semitism in
summer resorts; "The Human
Image," a novel, and "Base-
ball: A Historical Narrative."
His current novel retains all
the power of his former works
and keeps him in the forefront
as one of the ablest young writ-
ers of our time.
"One Winter in Boston" is the
story of a young man who finds
temporary employment in the
shoe department of a Boston
store and there comes in contact
with a group of salesmen who
open for him a new outlook on
life. He meets a girl employee
and a mild love affair develops.
He is recalled to his post after
the Christmas rush in order to

help track down shoplifters and
the arrest of the person who did
most of the stealing gains him
credit and status.
The novel. is valuable for its
expose of the thinking of the
low wage earners in the depart-
ment stores, their escape in
drinking and in sex parties, and
the prevalent poverty.

Nationalized Factories
Bake Matzoh in Hungary

BUDAPEST (JTA)—Passover
matzohs for Jews in Hungary
were baked this year in
the nationalized matzoh fac-
tdries which formerly were com-
munity-owned. The matzohs
were produced under the super-
vision of a rabbinical commis-
sion.
Meanwhile, it was revealed
here that the draft of a new
constitution for the Jewish com-
munity in Hungary will be sub-
mitted soon to the Hungarian
authorities for approval.

'High words of praise were be-
stowed on CARE by the Israel
Ministry of Social Welfare "for
the speedy and effective way"
in which CARE recently came to
the rescue when flash-floods had
driven several thousand settlers
of Israel's Sharon.

By the use of modern drain-
age systems the Israel govern-
ment has attempted • to over
come the annual . visitation
which, like the flooag if the
Mississippi Valley, periodically
tends to : destroy men's works.
This year the rains were so un-
precedented • that even the most
modern •flood - defenses failed.
News of the flood. coupled
with an appeal by the Welfare
Ministry..- to ihternatiortal • relief
organizations, were no sooner
received at Tel Aviv, when
Emanuel Borenstein, chief of
the Israel CARE mission, rushed
400 of CARE's special Israel
adult and baby food packages
into the stricken area.

Electric lights were tried for
the first time on Broadway in
New York City, Dec. 20, 1880.
