'Max D. Steuer: Trial Lawyer:'
A Son's Tribute to His Father

"Max D. Steuer: Trial Lawyer"
by New York Supreme Court
Justice Aron Steuer, published
by Random House, 457 Madison
Ave., New York 22, is the trib-
ute of an able son to a brilliant
father whose mastery of cross-
examination made him famous
in the legal fields.
The genius of Steuer is il-
lustrated by the inclusion of five
summaries of his most famous
cases, among them the morals
charge against Tex Rickard and
the famous Triangle Fire. For
lawyers this can serve as a text-
book. For laymen, the book is an
interesting description of an at-
torney's shrewd method of
pressing the truth out of stub-
born witnesses.
Justice Steuer makes these
interesting comments:

"Mr. Steuer's passing coin-
cided With the end of an era.

The trial men of the great
generation of which he was

the leader are gone with him
or have practically retired
from trial work: Edward
Mooney, Herbert Smythe, Em-
ory Buckner, Martin Conboy,
Samuel Untermyer, Martin
Littleton, Joseph Proskauer,
Isidore Gainsburg and others
comprising a mighty host.
They have not been replaced.
"It is not that today's law-
yers are not so goad. They are
every bit as good and in some
ways better. But the energies
of the top men are not direct-

ed to trial work except in a
few specialties .... One of the
factors that has tended to
bring this about is that bane
of so many institutions: rising
costs. Only the very rich and
those who have nothing to
lose can afford to litigate. So
that when the dramatic case
does occasionally appear, it is
no longer the arena where the
Titans do battle . . . It is fre-
quently found that the trial

men even in the specialties are
country-bred lawyers."

Justice Steuer states at the
outset that his book about his
father is not a biography but
rather a study of his legal ac-
tivities. There is, however, a
brief review of Max Steuer's
life, on the East Side of New
York; his schooling; his home
life; his knowledge of Yiddish
which was spoken at home. The
major aim of the book, however,
is to prove Max Steuer's keen-
ness in cross-examination. From
this point alone, the book has
unusual value for all students of
the law.

A sturdy immigrant pioneer
at the settlement of Neve Han
in Israel maneuvers his plough
as he tills the ancient and be-
loved soil. Passover at this
settlement will be the happiest
since its founders came from
France two years . ago after
surviving wartime Nazi occu-
pation. United Jewish Appeal
- funds brought them to Israel,
helped them establish their
settlement, made possible pur-
chase of farm equipment.
