Wondrous Is the Night of Passover

40—THE JEWISH NEWS

Friday, March 31, 1950

By ABRAHAM CAPLAN

Acquittal of Gestapo
Chief Arouses Bavaria

Gather about the shining Seder table
Pure in whiteness, sparkling with wine;
Ponder on the Passover's challenging symbols
Hinting deep lessons of eternal meaning.

MUNICH—(JTA)—A wave of
protest has swept Bavaria on
the heels of the acquittal by a
German court of the former
Gestapo chief of- Munich, Col.
Oswald Schaefer, and his as-
sistant, Richard Lebkuechner.
The prosecutor announced that
he is collecting material for a
new trial.
Dr. Philip Auerbach, Bavarian
Commissioner for Persecutees,
telegraphed American Commis-
sioner John J. McCloy, asking
that the trial verdict be set
aside. Organizations represent-
ing racial persecutees and
other victims of the Nazis have
denounced the court's action as
an aid to the neo-Nazi move-
ment.

'Follow the olden story as it ,,unfolds
The epic of Israel's struggle to be free,
An ancient struggle which this night begins anew
And must be waged with zealots' ardor
Lest all the potencies of the spirit of man,
Reaching out for high and noble fulfillment,
Sink deep into an abyss of quaggy slime
Churned by the fury of reciprocal enmities.

This is the Passover night; mark it well.
Know it as the night of God's stern judgment.
With bated breath He watches this night
As He has done since that dark midnight
When amid deeds of terror He laid low Egypt—
Egypt of the beast-gods, Egypt grown vast on slaves,
Which built giant cities with the bones of men.

This is the Passover, the richly-storied feast,
Festival of the Springtime, joyous for children.
That it surely is; yet it ends not there.
To you, men and women of mature years,
Adept in affairs of great practical import,
Self-esteeming and proud of your possessions—
The Passover saga proffers strong admonitions.
It tells of things as old as the serpentine Nile,
As new as the terror which gnaws in your heart,
As sanguine as the legends of the new-born Israel.

Like Moses, he will marshal long lines of men
Bearing ugly scars of hurt and degradation
On backs flailed by merciless whips.
He _will chide them for their needless sufferings,
He will reprove them for their sluggish gait.
You may hear his impetuous voice cry out:
`This Passover night is large with -expectance,
A night of hope and truth and wonder,
When the prophets' visions shall merge
Into the certainty of Israel's liberation,
If you pursue the ancient sure way
Which leads from Egypt onto freedom's welcoming soil!'

On April 5, at 8 p.m., WWJ-
TV, in cooperation with the cul-
ture commission of the JeWish
Community Council, will present
a television program entitled
"Passover in the Home and Syn-
agogue."
Rabbi Morris Adler, vice-pres-
ident of the Council; Morris Gar-
vett, a member of the executive
committee of the Council, and
Mrs. Alexander Sanders will take
part in a panel, discussing "Pass-
over, the Festival of Freedom
and Its Meaning for Modern
Man." The Passover Seder set-
ting will be shown, with cere-
monial objects borrowed from
the Jewish Art Collection of
Charles E. Feinberg. Appropriate
'Ilk Passover melodies will round out
the Passover Television show.
This is the first time in the
history of Detroit Jewry that the
rituals and ceremonial objects
of the Passover holiday will be
presented on television. This is
the latest in a series of holiday
programs sonsored by the Com-
munity Council in cooperation
with radio station WWJ-AM-
FM-TV.

Muse on the verses in the quaintly pictured Haggadah,
Taste of the bitter herbs, eat the unleavened bread,
Such as our fathers baked in their precipitate flight
From the consuming corruption of Egypt's power.
Sing the rhythmic songs from the hoary past,
Chant exultingly the rhapsodic refrains;
Join in unison—men and women laden with years,
Youths and maidens visioning a just world.
In the ecstacy of the singing of the stars
Perchance you will descry Messiah's steps
In the pregnant animation of the night.
