Israel's New Pioneers 38—THE JEWISH NEWS Friday, March 31, 1950 Mounting Racial Tension Arousing Civic Leaders Signs of heightened race ten- sion in Detroit were evidenced last week in developments re- garding the Schoolcraft Gardens cooperative housing project and a meeting of civic and religious leaders March 21 to consider - problems posed by reports of mounting unrest. Common Councilmen Mary V. Beck, Edward C o n n o r, Louis Miriani and James H. Garlick, voted down a move that would have side-tracked building of the co-operative houSing pro- ject. The matter is now in May- or Cobo's hands and it is con- sidered possible that he may veto the Council's decision, in an effort to block the project. The cooperative is also threat- ened by a temporary court re- straining order granted Tele- craft Improvement Assoc., which opposes Schoolcraft Gardens, apparently on - a racial basis. JCC Takes Part Boris M. Joffe and Dr. B. Benedict Glaze r, representing the Jewish Community Council met with civic and religious leaders at the Detroit Leland to discuss mounting racial tension. The group recommended unanimously that: the Mayor's interracial Committee be- strengthened 'by giving it statu- tory basis: that it's membership be made more representative; that its staff be given civilServ- ice status. Joffe, speaking over station- WDET March 22 reported on the recommendations and the group's request that George Schermer be r°tained as Inter- racial Committee director. Meeting later with the Mayor, the group was told that, con- tinuance of the Interracial Com- mittee and retention of Scher- mer were not definite. Cobo :urged the group's approval of 'his housing program, which has been severely criticized. Board of Education Another development involved the Coordinating Council on Human Relations, an organiza- tion engaged in bettering hu- man relations in Detroit. On March 23 they met to discuss problems of the teaching assign- ment practices by the Board of Education. The meeting was chaired by Herman Jacobs, director of the Jewish Centers of Detroit. The Council agreed that the present 'method of teacher assignment practices was a violation of Board of Education policy. The Council called for the assign- inent of teachers without regard to race, creed or national origin; a policy not now being carried Out in the schools.
