Late Israel Matz
Termed Builder of
Hebrew Renascence

By BERNARD G. RICHARDS

JERUSALEM, (JTA)—Discov-
ery of large quantities of sweet

water in the Azaba Valley, south
of the Dead Sea, was announced
by the Ministry of Agriculture.
The Ministry is conducting an
extensive water-drilling program
in a wide area extending from
the Biblical town of Sodom,
south of the Dead Sea, to Elath,
located on the southernmost tip
of the Negey.desert.
The Ministry further revealed
that it has been receiving en-
couraging reports from various
drilling installations where
sweet water has been found rel-
atively close to the earth's sur-
face in quantities which raise
strong hopes for large-scale ag-
ricultural settlement in regions
This recent newcomer to Is-
which had hitherto been con-
rael reflects the joy that comes sidered completely barren.

Israel, confronted by baffling
problems and bowed down by
.overwhelming tasks, h a s no
time to look back on its long
line of immortal inspirers and
founders. But when calmer
days ensue and time for reflec-
tion arrives there will unroll a
chronicle of honor to adorn its
annals.
In that scroll, Israel Matz, il-
luminating the chapter of
American Zionism and devotion
to Hebrew culture, will symbol-
ize a personality that became a from being able to build one's

the side of path-finding presi-
dents from Richard Gottheil,
Harry Friedenwald and Louis
Lipsky to Julian W. Mack and
Louis D. Brandeis.
Divine Holy Land
A man to whom the Holy
Land and the language and lit-
erature were literally divine, a
charming person of handsome
presence, merchant prince with

a gift for generous giving, con-
versationalist and raconteur—
one could write at length of this
vemarkable leader.

But when Israel Matz passed

away Feb. 9, on day after his
gist birthday, he left a void in

one sphere of Jewish life that

was felt more acutely than in
all other areas of his interests
and activities. The intellectual
World of the Hebrew language,
literature, and culture, founda-
tion of the national renascence,
was deprived a worker and sup-
porter the like of whom Ameri-
can Jewry has never known,
Descendant of scholar& and

Studies and wide reading, fired
by his fervor for the Zionist
ideal, Mr. Matz took upon him-
self the burden of promoting
and furthering the Hebrew lan-
guage and literature in America.
For many years he carried on

single-handed a notable labor
that would have done credit to
a big organization. He helped to
OstabliSh and gave free-handed
aid to the Histadruth Ivrith, the
Hebrew National School, the
Herzeliah, and many other in-
stitutions. in later years he es-
tablished the Israel Matz Foun-
dation for the support of He-
brew writers and scholars, to
41 46 preserve our literary treasures
and uphold the dignity of work-
ers in the field of Hebrew litera-

ture.

Cultural Pioneer
Throughout years of cultural
pioneering he persevered with
remarkable concentration a n d
!tenacity. He was associated with
e - very type of Hebrew publica-
tion or periodical ever launched
in the United States. From the
time when he assisted the late

Eliezer Ben Jehudah in the pub-
lication of his Millon Ivrith or
Hebrew Dictionary, to the latest
scholarly enterprise of this kind,

Mr. Matz took a dominant part

in all such undertakings.

While he assisted innumerable
publications, Hebrew schools,
and higher institutions of learn-
ing, he did not forget the ma-
terial foundations of Jewish na-
tional restoration in Palestine.

The colonization enterprise of
Gan Chaim and the economic
undertaking which he spon-
sored, while the state of Israel
was in the making, his trips to
Judea—in behalf of the lan-
guage and the land—testify to
his devotion and generosity. As
an enlightened, liberal American
Jew he helped every great cause
affecting h i s fellow - citizens,
lending strength and dignity to
Our community.

As one of the galaxy of Ameri-
tan Jewish pioneers, he helped
lay the foundations that are
now part of a glorious record,
a history in which his name will
shine with undiminished bril-
liance.
