Since the Hitler era, between erosity of Detroit Jewry in sup-

3,500 and 4,000 Jewish new
Americans have come to De-
troit. Of those, 10% are receiv-
ing relief from the community
through funds delegated by the
Allied Jewish Campaign to - Re-
settlement Service, the Jewish
Welfare Federation agency re-
sponsible for helping immigrants
adjust in America. The others,
supported by community re-
sources or by relVves, have es-
tablished themse'Nes in homes
and jobs.
In the final drive to empty
the DP camps last year, Detroit
agreed to accept 200 DP families.
All but 15 have arrived, and it
is hoped that Congress will
change the DP laW to permit
others into this country.
These new arrivals, like the
present relief case load of near-
ly 400 will be provided by Re-
settlement Service with funds
received from the 1950 Allied
-Jewish Campaign. An additional
120 people are receiving the
benefits of trained case work in
the difficult tasks of learning
a new language, adapting to
new customs and adjusting to a
new way of life.
At least 90% of these new ar-
rivals have no problem that
cannot be: solvedby permanent
housing and a job, according to
Harold Silver, executive director
, of Resettlement Service. "Their
health, both mental and physi-
411116, cal, is surprisingly good;" he
said, "They only need initial
community boosts to become
self - suppOrting, constructive
residents."
Most of them are coup/es who
married in the DP camps, people
in their 30's and 40's with at
least one child under five years
old. They have been assisted in
their adjustment by the com-
bined thinking, talents and fa-
cilities of Federation agencies,
such as Jewish Vocational Serv-
ice, North End Clinic, House of
Shelter, Jewish Community
Center, Hebrew Free Loan As-•
sociation and the United ,Hebrew
Schools.

The Jewish Vocational Serv-
ice, House of Shelter and United
Hebrew Schools will receive
• their total- deficit financing from
the 1950 AJC. North End Clinic
and the Jewish Community Cen-
ter ' receive funds ' through the
Campaign. Other beneficiaries
adding new Americans are the
Yiddish Schools; Farband, Sho-
lem Aleichem Workmen's Cir-
cle, United Jewish High 'School,
t and Yeshivath Beth Yehudah.
The Resettlement Service pro-
gram spent $340,000 in 1949-50,
in addition to the amounts
spent by other agencies for aid
to new Americans locally. For
the case load of Resettlement
Services a tentative budget esti-
mate for 1950-51, of $316,429 has
been submitted. The allocation
will be based on present and an-
ticipated needs and on the gen-

porting the Allied Jewish Cam
paign, which embodies more
than 50 other local, national and
overseas s causes, including • the
United Jewish Appeal.
The new Americans have
proven that, given an initial
helping hand by the Detroit
community, they can adjust to
a constructive life here. In one
more year of generous giving to
the Allied Jewish Campaign De-
troit can begin the discharge of
its responsibility for Jewish sur-
vivors who are able to become
new Americans.
