Shalom described Israel as a
"Poets' Paradise."
"Our nation has been founded
and is developing under work-
ers who are largely intellectu-
als," explained Shalom, whose
tour is being sponsored by the
Histadruth Ivrith of America.
"That's why poets are highly
respected and have a great
influence on national thought.
Our Minister of Communica-
tions, David Remez, has pub-
lished much of his own verse,
and our Minister of Foerign
Affairs, Moshe Sharrett, is au-
thor of numerous articles on
literature."

Prime Minister Ben Gurion is
considering a poetry council for
the benefit of bards under Zal-
man Shazar, Minister of Cul-
ture and Education, Shalom
said.
And Israeli newspapers, he
pointed out, often pay poets a
regular salary for permission to
print part of their output. He
himself receives a salary from
the newspaper, Davar, on that
basis.
As for the encouragement of
younger poets, they are given
time off from their empire-
building labor in the fields and
factories, sometimes several
months, in order to finish a
book. Poetry readings held at
agricultural festivals also stim-
ulate creative literary activity.
There are no political strings
attached," Shalom added.
They can write what they
please."
Shalom himself, 45, is a lyri-
cist who received the Tel Aviv
Municipality Prize for his book
of poems, "Face to Face." He
also won the Brenner Prize last
year for his "Collected Poems."
And he has translated ShakeS-
peare and Walt Whitman into
Hebrew.
Born in Poland and reared in
Vienna, he first came to Pales-
tine in 1922 with a group of
Zionists and served as a teacher.
"I hope to convince Ameri-
cans," he said finally, "that our
two literatures have much in
common, and should be ex-
changed."
