New Disasters Spur Drive
Israel Insecure, Migrations Grow,
Leaders Warn Jewish Community
Hundreds of Allied Jewish Campaign workers this week commenced the great job of raising millions of dollars for the support of all
Detroit educational, social service, health and recreation-al needs and to assist in the settlement in Israel of the hundreds of thousands of
Jews from the Iron Curtain and Moslem countries.
Although neither a quota nor a campaign. chairman have as yet been named, the drive went into full force after a series of meetings
held on Sunday and Monday; Sunday morning, solicitors were enrolled in the larger gifts division. On Monday evening, Dr. Nahum
Goldmann, chairman of the American section of the Jewish Agency; Edward M. M. Warburg, chairman of the Joint Distribution Com-
mittee; Dr. B. Benedict Glazer, rabbi of Temple Beth El; Judge Theodore Levin,•vice-pre s ident of the Jewish Welfare Federation, who
presided, and Isidore Sobeloff, Federation director, spoke at the rally at Temple Beth El and appealed. far workers and contributions.
While it is not definitely known how large the quota will be this year, the feeling is that Detroit Jewry must raise at least as much
as in 1948—when the record amount of $5,778,042 was raised—and certainly much more than in 1949, when the sum of $5,323,116 'was
subscribed.
A chairman for the drive may be named by the Federation's executive committee on Monday, in. time for announcement at a dinner
meeting of big givers that night. The formal opening of the general campaign will take

Zionist leader, will be the guest speaker. •
At the rally at Temple Beth El on Mon day evening, Dr. Goldmann, who was in Israel
in January and who in two weeks again will leave for important conferences in Israel stated
that the Jewish state is not yet secure, that its existence is threatened by war and econo-
mic diffictiltie8 and warned :
• "The future of the Jewish people depends as much on what happens there as on '
what' happens here. If Jewry will approach the problem in 'this spirit, the difficulties will-
be overcome and the Jewish state will be secure and a blessing for many generations to
come. In the delirious days, when we rejoiced over the establishment of the Jewish state,
all Jews felt, rightfully, that they had a share in Israel's, rise. The future is gloomy.
Either this, the greatest venture in all histor y, will remain the responsibility of all Jews,
or the stature of our people will go dowh. No one can escape from defeat if Israel fails.
Even those like the Council of Judaism mem bers who , can. say that they did not favor
Israel will not be immune from ..a. decline.of vestige. Theirs is a silly escape. If anything
happens to the Jewish state, Jewigh. life will collapse,. •

Dr. Goldinan, in a• frank analysis of the existing situation, stated that the United Jew-

judgment arose in the belief
