The United States

New Yorkers raised $6,000,000 at their opening



dinner for the United Jewish Appeal of 1950. The campaign this
year is expected to exceed last year's $40,000,000 . . . Rabbi M. C.
Weiler, South African Jewish leader now touring this country,
speaking in New York, urged that ORT coordinate its work in
the Jewish state with the programs of the Jewish Agency and
the Histadrut . . . "America must become the reservoir of- young
blood for Israel," Ada Maimon, Knesset member, declared on
arrival in New York. She urged United States Jews to supply
Israel not only with funds and material supplies but also "trained,
healthy pioneers who have the 'know-how' with which to develop
the land" . . . United Lubavitcher Yeshivoth has announced a
survey on the possibilities of establishing Jewish religious day
schools in Latin American countries.
WASHINGTON Rabbi David Nachum Herman of Cong. Tif-
ere' th Israel of Brooklyn on March 7 became the first Orthodox
rabbi to recite the invocation at the opening
session of the House of Representatives . . . The
State Department still considers it "advisable"
that Arab states should be "generally strength-
ened for defensive purposes, Sen. Henry Cabot
Lodge, Jr.. of Massachusetts, was informed in a
letter from Assistant Secretary Jack K. McFall,
writing for Dean Acheson.
CHICAGO Sinai Temple, constructed at a
cost of nearly $2,000,000, was dedicated last week
with three-day ceremonies.

in the world, latt not yet to the United States.
TEL AVIV Israel _is ready to grant contracts for the con-
struction of a deep-sea port at Tel Aviv to foreign corporations
on a concession basis . . . The Israel Ministry of Supply has
purchased 16,000 tons of surplus potatoes from the United States
. Talks to adjust aviation problems between the United States
and Israel will begin next week in Washington. Arieh Pinkus,
official of the communications ministry and manager of El Al
airline will be in the United States for that purpose . . . Israel is
seriously considering a French request that it recognize the Bao
Dai regime in Indo-China . . . A chair in Hebrew will be created
soon at the University of Prague, sponsored by the Israel-Czech
Friendship League.
HAIFA A young, non-Jewish Spaniard who entered Israel
illegally was imprisoned for three days and fined, but permitted
to remain in the country. He claims to be descended from a
Marrano family.

LONDON—After May 1, British tourists visiting Israel will be
permitted to take • foreign currency, equivalent to $140 for each
adult, to pay their expenses in the Jewish state.
PARIS A plastic bomb exploded in the offices of a card board
manufacturing company in Montreuil owned by Bernard Mantel,
a French Jew. Police indicated they suspect the bomb was
planted by a secret anti-Semitic group.
ROME Italian Jewry launched a United Palestine Appeal
campaign at a meeting attended by Jewish communal leaders
from all parts of the country.
MUNICH Chief Rabbi Steven S. Schwarzchild of Berlin;
Julius Meyer, president of the Federation of Jewish communities
of the Soviet zone of Germany; Wilhelm Pieck, president of the
East German Republic, and Otto Nuschke, deputy premier, con-
ferred on the provision of rabbinical services and assistance for
Jews in the Soviet zone.
VIENNA—Franz Jambor, newly-appointed Jewish agency di-
rector for Vienna, said that reorganization of the Zionist Organi-
zation in Austria is necessary.

For the first time in its half-century of exist-

ewe, the Hong Kong Jewish community has been approached by
the Keren Hayesod to conduct a fund-raising campaign in behalf
of Israel institutions. The community is unique in that it has no
local welfare problem; only four persons are being assisted by
the community.
BOMBAY Proposals for the amelioration of living conditions
and eventual emigration for the Jews of Afghanistan have been
submitted to the Afghan ambassador at New Delhi by the chair-
man of the Zionist Federation of Bombay . . . Cooperative settle-
ments in Israel have been held up by a leading Indian woman
as an example for India to follow in settling its refugee problem.



AJC Eulogizes Masaryk

100th Anniversary

NEW YORK—(JTA)—On the
occasion of the hundredth an-
niversary of his birth, Thomas
G. Masaryk, founder and first
president of the Republic of
Czechslovakia, was eulogized by
the American Jewish Commit-
tee "as one of history's great
fighters in the cause of individ-
ual liberty."
Jacob Blaustein, president of
the Committee, pointed out that
American Jews were among Dr.
Masaryk's firmest supporters in
his struggle to achieve indepen-
dence for Czechoslovakia.
