Publisher Reissues Gaster's 'Passover' Due to production delays, Dr. Theodor H. Gaster's "Passover: Its History and Traditions," ap- peared too late for the 5709 Passover season. This excellent study of the Passover festival now has been re-issued in time for the coming Passover 5710 by its publishers, Henry Schuman, Inc., at a re- duced price. The Passover celebration at present takes on great meaning, by reason of the establishment of a Jewish state. The festival, which commemorates the libera- tion of the Jews from Egypt, be- comes as well a "celebration of the ideal of Liberty -itself." Dr. Gaster has written a truly unique book, tracing the story of . the festival not only in terms of the accepted tradition, but against the background of what modern research has uncovered concerning the true origins and evolution of Passover and its customs. The book contains many fas- cinating illustrations, dating back as far as the 14th century. Dr. Gaster has included, too, many Passover songs which are here translated into English for the first time: . He deals charm- ingly with all the familiar ele- ments of the eight-day Passover festival: Seder, unleavened bread, bitter herbs, Haggadah, paschal lamb, Cup of Elijah, le- gends, chants and rhymes. Dr. Gaster is a specialist in the fields of comparative reli- gion and comparative philology. He is former Chief of the Heb- raic Section of the U.S. Library of Congress, and is currently on the faculty of Dropsie College in Philadelphia and the Asia In- stitute in New York. On March 23 Schuman will publish his monumental,- schol- arly work: "Thespis: Ritua 1; Myth and Drama in the Ancient Near East. Rare. Items Form Basis For New Book by SchWarz .NEW YORK-Leo W. Schwarz, who returned last October from a three 7month tour of Germany and Israel with 30 cases . of material for the sequel to his recently. published "The Root and the Bough", is off again for another on-the-spot survey in German to confer" with Allied official's and liberated peoples there and in Austria. • • He hopes to complete the new - (as yet untitled) manscript by August.. Rinehart plans to pub- lish it this fall. Mr. Schwarz' research mater- ial is probably the largest and most valuable c011ection in the world. Among the rare items are personal diaries written as the Allier Armies overran Germany, minutes of camp committees in assembly centers, records of the Civil Affairs Division which- the IL S. Army made accessible for the first time, and protocols of Germans who were recognized as heroes by Jews. The author plans to present his complete collection of re- search, gathered for the popu- lar anthology series, which Rinehart initiated in' 1935, to a university 'library. Imperialism' BUCHAREST (JTA)-The fight against Zionism "as a tool of American imperialism" should be one of the major objectives of the Jewish Democratic Com- mittee in Romania in 1950, Bercu Feldmann, secrelar y- general of the organization and a member of Parliament, told a conference here of leading members of the Committee from all parts of the country. The speaker criticized Jewish writers in Romania for being "absent" from the fight against Zionism. He also criticized some of the leaders of the Jewish Democratic Committee for not conducting the campaign against Zionism "with sufficient vigor." FOR SALE, household furnishings, 2986 Sturtevant. In the Jerusalem corridor, 1,000, 000_ trees will be planted and to continue linking up the existing woods in the Hills of Ephraim, another half million will be plx.nted. A million trees are scheduled for upper and eastern Galilee and half a million trees for lower Galilee from Rosh Pina to Sejera. Most of the work will be done by the new work village settle- ments. At present there are five such settlements and 25 more will be established this sum_mer with 100 families each. Inhabitants of the work vil- lages are mostly Yemenites. They are given two dunams of land and 100 chickens by the Jewish Agency and live in tents while building their own houses and, roads and preparing JNF land for tree-planting. They work about 200 days yearly on the trees, receiving IL.1.400 daily from the JNF. In addition, JNF will contract work with a num- ber of settlements to plant trees in their areas. More than 4,000 Jewish chil- dren and young people in France, among. them some 1,700 orphans. in 35 children's homes, are still dependent on the Joint Distribution Committee for food, clothing ana medical care, Au- ren Kahn stated upon his re- turn to the United States after four and half years of service as a JDC welfare officer in Ftance. These youngsters are among the 25,000 men, women and chil- dren in France still receiving JDC aid, he declared. In addition to the J,,700 or- phans in child-care homes, he said, aid is going to some 1,300 children in 12 JDC-subventioned Youth Aliyah homes, and about 1,000 young people in hachsha- xoth, who are in various stages of training and preparation for a future life in Israel. Immediately after V-E Day, he said, there were some 10,500 Jewish children in France re- ceiving JDC care and assistance.
