Clipping From Israel
A sensational report about the fate of Jewish writers in
Soviet Russia appears in a recent issue of the Israel paper Davar
. . . The story is that Solomon Michoels, one-time head of the
Moscow Jewish Anti-Fascist Committee, did not die a natural
death . .. It is said that alleged evidence of pro-American es-
pionage had been uncovered within the committee . . . The com-
mittee leaders became alarmed though they were skeptical of
the whole thing . . . Instead of passing the information to Soviet
authorities Michoels and Itzhek Feffer, who visited the United
States as emissaries of Soviet Jewry shortly after the Nazi at-
tack on Russia, decided to conduct an investigation of their own
within the committee .. . In the meantime the atmosphere be-
came heavy and more shadowy . . . Soon Michoels visited Minsk
where he was found dead . , . Who killed him .and why? .. .
The conclusion, says Davar, is quite "clear" .. . Later the au-
thorities stepped in and began rounding up all people who had
knowledge of the incident and kept silent ... The first one to
be arrested was Itzhek Feffer . . . Then canie the liquidation of
the Jewish anti-Fascist committee, the closing down of the Jew-
ish press and • the suppression of Jewish publications . .. More
arrests followed .. . The last one to be arrested was David Ber-
gelson, noted Yiddish writer who had gained wide esteem with
the Soviet regime . . . One fine morning he was invited for a
"talk" . . . When he arrived at the site where he was to be in-
terrogated it had become clear to him that he was facing an
inescapable fate . . . He was told the investigation would take
two days . .. Later, however, an investigating body came to his
home, searched the house thoroughly, tore up the floor and at-
tic, confiscated his money, ransacked his desk and carried off his
books and manuscripts in an open vehicle . .. People who wit-
nessed - the scene say they were horrified as the wind scattered
the pages of Bergelson's manuscripts over the Moscow streets .. .
Bergelson's son, who had been a lecturer at the Moscow gymna-
sium, is now living in poverty . . . It isn't quite certain where the
arrested Jewish writers are kept, although it is said somewhere
near Leningrad . . . "This story, incidentally, comes from a re-
liable source," Davar notes.
Heard and Recorded
Chancellor - Adenauer of the Bonn government in Germany
has written a letter to a very prominent German-Jewish refugee
in this • country urging that German-Jewish refugees return to
their former homeland .. . Michael M. Nisselson, president of the
Amalgamated Bank of New York, has been appointed to the Mid-
Century White House Conference on Children and Youth to be
held in December . . . Nisselson is a participant in so many
civic, communal and business organizations that listing them
would take the rest of this page.
If it weren't for the fact that the same plane brought them
to Israel, Edward G. Robinson of movie fame and Serge Kusse-
vitsky of music fame might not have met yet . . . Both artists
took the same Paris plane for Israel . . . Kussevitsky had fallen
asleep and considerate Robinson, who recognized his co-passenger,
was reluctant to jar the noted conductor from his deep slumber
. . . When the plane landed in Israel and the passengers marched
out Robinson walked over to Kussevitsky and said with a Yiddish
greeting "where do our brethren meet? In the Jewish land" .. .
On noting that his hotel room had no mezzuzah Robinson insisted
that the management post one on the door . . . When Robin-
son arrived at LaGuardia airfield on his way back from Israel
the first thing fie asked the Jewish reporters was "where is there
a synagogue around here, I have yahrzeit after my father and I
want to say kaddish" .. . He spoke in a natural and juicy Yid-
dish . . . What impressed him most about Israel was the spirit
of the youth . . . It is reliably rumored that he may play the
leading role in a movie dealing with the life of Israeli President
Chaim Weizmann . . . When Robinson was asked what language
he spoke in Israel he replied "Yiddish, of course, most Jews I
met in Israel spoke Yiddish and what a Yiddish."
Billy Rose's famous column "Pitching Horseshoes" will no
longer appear in the New York Herald-Tribune . .. Rose was said
to have written a piece denouncing Rudolph Bing, Metropolitan
Opera director, for engaging Nazi-tainted Kirsten Flagstad . . . .
The Tribune refused to print the column out of fear, it is said,
it would open itself to a libel suit . . • Billy Rose was born Wil-
liam Samuel Rosenberg.

the Quota; ADL's campaign for
elimination of prejudice in in-
stitutions of higher learning:
"Measure of Freedom," the
ADL's forthcoming survey of
anti-Semitism in the -United
States, written by Arnold For-
ster, midwest director of Bnai
Brith's civil rights division.
Dr. Shapiro stressed the point
that racio - religious, economic
and social prejudice is being
overcome. That it is a long, hard
pull. That ADL is active in all
fields to combat discrimination.
That the job is far from being
done.

Bnai Brith, through its Anti-
Defamation League, is striking
at prejudice of 11 kinds by
le gisla ti v e. ana educational
means; through its efforts to
secure slum clearance and bet-
ter housing.
Members of Harry B. Keidan
Lodge heard that at a meeting
in the Book Cadillac Hotel
Tuesday evening, March 7, from
Dr. Leo Shapiro, national direc-
tor of the ADL department of
education.
Dr. Shapiro reviewed the
growth of ADL within Bnai
Brith and its rise to national
recognition through its work in
breaking 'down prejudice.
"ADL," he said, "does not push
legislation like FEPC, or cam-
paign for better housing by it-
self. It works with other agen-
cies, oragnizing and coordinat-
ing their activities. ADL has a
Tole, but it works with partners."
ADL, he stated, is recognized
throughout the country for its
work in organizing and coordi-
nating educational programs;
teachers workshops, campaigns
for better housing and pushing
such legislation as FEPC.
"There is no pattern for anti-
Semitism or any other preju-
dices," Dr. Shapiro said. "Our
surveys have shown that you
don't have to see people, Jews or
Negroes, to hate them. The more
surveys made, the more we re-
alize that things are bad, all
over."
Casting an eye to the coming
year, he told Keidan Lodge
members to expect to hear a lot
about "CQ" and "WOF"—Crack
