Miserable Jews of Tripolitania
Find Strength to Sing of Future

By PAULETTE OPPERT

For the Jews of Tripolitania,
misery and poverty have grown
greater every day. When war
came mbst of Tripolitania's Jews
were peddlers who used to leave
their homes on Monday and
come back on Friday before sun-
down. Then came a period when
not all those who left would
come back. Their bodies would
be found somewhere in the des-
ert. And soon, for Tripolitania's
Jews, it became better to stay at
home and starve.
On my first aft&noon in Tri-
poli I visited a day camp where
hundreds of children, who had
been evacuated from a city in
the interior, were playing on the
beach. I was struck not only by
the eagerness with which they
ran to get a bread-and-jam
sandwich, but by the deep fear
in their eyes. Here they were
under good care, receiving food'
and clothing from the Joint Dis-
tribution Committee. Yet the
fear showed in their flashing
anxious eyes.

Better Future Ahead

Did these children have a fu-
ture, I asked myself? Yes, for
the "old-timers" among them
were already teaching the new
arrivals Hebrew songs and how
to dance the Hora. It would not
be long before they would leave
these shores and fear behind.
Forty thousand Arabs and
7,500 Jews who live in the hara,
(ghetto) and who cannot go out,
though the Arabs can enter—
that is the desert village of
Horns. There is little protection
fOr the Jews as the police force
is Arab too.
The hara is a conglomeration
of tiny one-room shacks without
windows. The only door of each

tack. The filth and the smell is
beyond description.
But when we arrived the en-
tire Jewish oppulation turned
out to greet us. Suddenly they
started singing, singing in He-
brew, voicing their hopes for
leaving, and thanking the Lord
for having created Israel.

Cooperative Settlers
Pay Income Tax Too

JERUSALEM, (JTA) —
Members of kibbutzim and
other cooperative settlements
in Israel will have to pay an
income tax on the same
basis as other wage earners,
regardless of their communal
way of life.
A statement to this effect,
in Parliament in reply to a
question, was cabled by Labor
Minister. Golda Myerson from
London.
From now on, persons who
buy black market goods will
be punished more severely
than those who sell them, an
Israel judge declared. The
judge was I. Giladi, presiding
justice of Tel Aviv's special
anti-profiteering court.

`The American Pattern,'
AJC Leaflet, Traces
Judaism in America

With publication of "The
American Pattern," first in a
series of leaflets devoted to the
theme: "This Is Our Home," the
American Jewish Committee an-
nounced an educational program
designed to stimulate thinking
and discussion on the nature of
American democracy; the Jew-
ish past, present and future in
the United States, and the en-
during values of the Jewish spir-
itual and cultural heritage.
The leaflets mark the begin-
ning of a national program,
headed by Herbert B. Ehrmann
of Boston, chairman of the ad-
ministrative committee, activat-
ed on the community level
through the membership of the
American Jewish Committee in
38 chapters and in- more than
50 cities and also in cooperation
with other American Jewish re-
ligious, educational and com-
munal organizations.
The 16-page booklet on "The
American Pattern" reviews the
history of American hospitality
to all religious groups since Co-
lonial days and points out that
since Jews came to these shores
"hard on the heels of the first
Puritans, Episcopalians, Luther-
ans, Presbyterians, Quakers and
Catholics," their tradition is as
indigenous to this soil as that .
of any other group.
Tracing the history of re-
ligious prejudice in the United
States, the pamphlet emphasizes
that "all groups, especially when
newly immigrant, have at one
time or another been subject to
similar persecutiong."
Pointing out that "most Amer-
icans recognize and accept the
fact" that "America would not
be today what it is if it had not
been eagerly receptive to all
strains, all influences," the
pamphlet shows the change in
concept that has taken place in
the historical analysis of Ameri-
can civilization.

As we talked with these Jews,
whose lives have scar c e l y
changed for 2,000 years, as we
listened to their singing, they
tried to make us feel their grati-
tude for what the 'JDC is doing
for them. They had difficulty
doing so. But finally they trans-
lated their emotions into an-
other song for us:
"Oh Lord, protect the 'Joint'
for the help it brings us.
Oh Lord, protect Bens Gurion
and the . State where he ex
pects us.
Houdini and Unlocked
Blessed be the 'Joint' and Ben

Ontario May Legally
Ban Property Limits

DO YOU KNOW ABOUT

.

TORONTO — (JTA) — The
Government of Ontario plans
legislation making it illegal
to place any, racial or reli-
gious restrictions in property
deeds, it was reported here.
The government, it was un-
derstood, will outlaw any fu-
ture deeds which stipulate
that persons of specific races
or religions cannot buy the
property.
Since the legality of a re-
strictive covenant was up-
held by Justice A. Schroeder
in the Ontario Supreme
Court in 1948, and sustained
in the Ontario Court of Ap-
peal by a unanimous decision
last year, the government has
been under pressure by civil
liberties groups to enact a
prohibitive law.
