Sanhedrin Proposal Fails To Win Rabbis
Friday, February 17, 1950
Ancient Israel Coin
A replica of the original
shekel minted circa 138
B.C.E., about 2,088 years ago.
Top view of the coin shows a
jeweled cup under the letters
"Shin" and "Bet," indicating
"Shnat-Bet," second year. Old
Hebrew wording on the coin
reads, "Shekel Yisrael." Re-
verse side (bottom view)
bears a flowering lily and in-
scription, "Yerushalayim Ha-
kedosihah," (Jerusalem the
Holy). Simon Maccabeus orig-
inated the shekel in 143 B.C.
on becoming high priest of
Judea.
JERUSALEM, (JTA)—A pro-
posal for the reestablishment of
the Sanhedrin, advanced by Is-
rael's Minister for Religion,
Rabbi Judah L. Mairnon, failed
to receive sufficient support at
a stormy meeting of the organi-
zational committee of the na-
tionwide rabbinical conference
which is taking place here.
The conference, held under
the chairmanship of Sephardic
Chief Rabbi Ben Zion Uziel,
adopted a resolution calling up-
on the Israel government to
improv e religious activities,
especially in the immigrant
camps. The resolution demand-
ed that religious education be
given to all those who desire
it.
Simultaneously the confer-
ence accepted a proposal that
each rabbi in the country con-
tribute one-fourth of his
monthly salary for the promo-
tion of religious education in
the camps.
Criticism was voiced by Rabbi
Maimon, who advocated res-
traint pending the findings of
the inquiry committee which
the Israel Cabinet appointed for
the purpose of establishing the
exact situation with regard to
religious education in the
camps.
Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi Isaac
Herzog appealed to the labor
movement in Israel to "repair
the harm done" by the religious
education situation which has
developed in the immigrant
camps. He also appealed to the
press not to consider the de-
mand for religious education in
the camps a political matter but
as a "purely religious matter
concerning the entire nation."

population.
