Isthmania (Guatemala)
Gets Closer to Israel

Editor, The Jewish News:

Almost buried away among the
news dispatches several weeks
ago was an item from the Re-
public of Guatemala. This tiny
Central American country want-
ed its North American neighbors
to know that she had changed
her name—to the difficult-to-
pronounce name of Isthmania.
Included in the Guatemala dis-
patch was this final note: that
effective Feb. 1, all mail address-
ed to "Guatemala" would be re-
turned to the sender.
Of course, it wasn't the postal
change of address that caught
my eye. I was looking deeper
and became aware,that there is
more to it than meets the eye.
Why this sudden - change of
name? Is it possible the good
Senor Jorge Garcia-Granados, a
powerful figure in Guatemala
domestic and foreign affairs, is
the force behind this move?
It's no secret that Senor Gran-
ados is a trusted friend of Israel
and a very close colleague of
Aubrey Eban. Is it that Gra,ndos
wanted company, or vice versa?
Mr. Eban's loneliness sitting be-
tween Iraq and Lebanon may
have provoked this change of
name from Guatemala to Is-
thmania.. If we remember that
Israel has but a few friends in
the United Nations, this reason-
ing becomes the more plausible.
Perhaps, too, this move was
made to take care of the possi-
bilities of Jordan's admission to
the United Nations. After all, IST
follows ISR . . . and how much
closer can one get?

the.4kholy shrines of democracy,
the university refuses to admit
Negro students. .It is the only
Jim Crow university in the Dis-
trict of Columbia.
A few years ago, a number of
GI amputees were barred from
attending a play in the univerl-
sity's auditorium. The amputees
happened to be Negroes. One
Jewish student, a combat war
veteran, organized a protest
demonstration. He was expelled.
The Hillel group, some time
ago, incurred the wrath of the
university's president, Dr. Cloyd
H. Marvin. They had dared to
invite a- Negro singer to peeform
in the Hillel House.
Recently, Hillel decided it was
time to fight. The foundation
aligned itself with other liberal
elements on the campus. Led
by Hillel President Manny Helz-
ner, and advised by the director,
Irwin Glatstein, the JeWish stu-
dents drafted a strongly worded
resolution addressed to the uni-
versity and to the GWU religious
council.
Hillel members said that as
Jews it was their religious duty
to ,stand up for human rights
anil the brotherhood of man.
