Women's Work Acclaimed
Speaking here last Thursday,
at a luncheon meeting of a
group of JNF workers, at the
Tuller Hotel, Elias M. Epstein,
head of the JNF office in
Jerusalem, praised the work
of the Detroit JNF Ladies'
Auxiliary and commended the
local community's women work-
ers for land redemption for es-
tablishing the Detroit Nachlah
near Jerusalem.
Epstein reported on the
JNF's
accomplishments and
stated that until the establish-
ment of statehood in Israel the
JNF possessed 1,000,000 dunams
of land. Since then, negotia-
tions were completed for the
acquisition of another million
dunams of land for which JNF
will compensate, through the
Israel government, the former
Arab landowners.
"We are not interested in
confiscations but in compensat-
ing rightful owners," he stated.
New JNF Efforts
He described new efforts of
the JNF, including irrigation
schemes and plans to provide
agricultural settlements with
water. He reported that the cur-
rent plan is to plant 3,000,000
trees in Israel this year; six times
more than in any other previ-
ous year.
William Hordes, who with
Mrs. Hordes were hosts at the
luncheon, told of his own expe-
riences in Israel and of the tre-
mendous accomplishments of
the JNF.
Epstein also was guest of
the Zionist Organization of De-
troit at dinner on Jan. 19, prior
to his address to the ZOD that
night at the Northwest Hebrew
Congregation.
