MIAMI BEACH, Fla.—Restrict-
ed hotels are no more to be seen
on Collins Ave . . . and wisely
so because they'd certainly be
lonely places these days! . . .
Jewish resorters by far make up
the population majority here
during the lush season . . . and
their likes and dislikes are now
regarded as the prime factors
for success of business in Miami
Beach during that period . . .
The now-named Robert Richter
Hotel was restricted until Joe
Richter bought the place and re-
titled it in memory of his son
who was killed in action during
the war ... So was the Pancoast
before being taken over by Gros-
singer's.
* * *
WHEN DAY IS DONE . . . and
the moon comes over Miami .. .
the local night spots jump 'b.l
the wee hours of morn . . . with
tops in entertainment . . . Mo-
ishe Oysher, the great singer, is
at Kitty Davis' ... and in respect
to the Sabbath will not appear
on Friday nights . . . We saw
Lou Holtz the other midnight
huddling at another spot with
Danny (Kitty) Davis .. . which
might mean an engagement for
the vet dialectician . . . Detroit
friends, Carroll and Gorman,
are at 'Valhalla Club . . . Danny
Kaye opened at the Beachcomb-
er . . . following Dean Martin
and Jerry Lewis who created a
sensation . . . Both boys wear
Mazuzahs around their necks
.. Martin is Italian and Lewis
is Jewish . • . Tony Martin is at
Club Boheme and Carmen
Miranda is at Copa City . . .
Jack Goldman has Jan Murray
and those daffy Vagabonds at
his Clover Club . . . These are
just samples of the type of
nitery entertainment offered for
vacationists.
HARVEY S T 0 N E, Detroit
comedian, checked into the
Lord Tarleton . . . and is due to
open at Copa City, the most fab-
ulously beautiful spot in all
Miami Beach. Harvey got his
first glimpse' of Virginia Foo's
Chinese restaurant . . . in which
he has been a partner for over
a year.

PERSONAL DEP . . . From
sun-worshippers in Miami Beach
. to folks in Detroit.
TO DR. JULIE WEBER and Al
"Klaina Mentch" Padover . . .
"This is living, guys. Only hope
I'll be doing same after •I see the
hotel bill!" . . Benny LaBrett.
TO BILL FELDMAN . . . "Bring
my blue shoes." . Bill Bitn.-
krant.
TO MRS. M. RASKIN . . .
"Say, mom ! Mary and I don't
happen to have an inheritance
coming from some rich relative,
do we?"
* * *
FORMER DFTROITERS, Sid
and Sylvia Siegel, now living in
Miami City, have a very "hep"
son named Howard with an
equally sharp mind ... One day
he came home with a big book
under his. arm, . . Sid asked
to see it . . . The name of the
book was "How To Raise Chil-
dren Properly" . "Howard,
what are you doing with that
kind of book?" asked Sid ... The
rapier-like reply was, "I'm just
checking up on you and mom."
. * * *
SIGHTS 'N SCENES . .. Wal-
ter Winchell walking around
never without his baseball cap
on and wearing beat-up slacks
and an old-looking sport shirt
. . But he's "The King" . . .
and the king can do no wrong
. . . "Silver Dollar Jake" Schrei-
ber, former Detroiter, riding
around in a convertible on which
is attached every type of auto-
mobile accessory in the book,
and wearing a huge sized som-
brero . . • Jake, known down
here as an eccentric character, is
always selling U. S. Savings
Bonds . . . The other night he
was standing in front• of the
Beachcomber nitery with a large
milk container . . . taking col-
lection for . the March of Dimes

centennial anniversary of the es-
tablishment of Congregation
Gates of Prayer here was cele-
brated this week at a special
service in the Reform Temple.

of Benny LaBrett, Gratiot Ave.
loan broker . . . Started with
dinner at Sherry Frontenac,
where we are staying, and
wound up at closing show of
Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis at
Beachcomber . . . "Everything
would be complete if only my
Rosie were here with me," said
Benny after blowing out all the
candles . . .Nate Diamond being
helped out of the Sherry Fron-

each other. Dr. and Mrs. Tobias

pastry at Mammy's with the big
neon sign out front that reads,
"Where the stars come out at
night and stay until dawn."

BIG NEWS among the rumba
teachers down here is that the
Orquestra Latina Cubano will
play the Rumba Nite in Detroit

America . . . and almost every
major hotel has Latin-American
dancing exhibitions, schools and
orchestras.
