Israel Minister Calls
For New Sanhedrin

TIBERIAS, Israel, (JTA) -
Israel's Minister of Religion
Rabbi Judah Maimon issued a
moving appeal to all chief rabbis
in Israel to summon a national
conference of practicing rabbis
to discuss the possibility of re-
establishing the Sanhedrin, the
ancient Jewish tribunal which
interpreted Jewish law and en-
acted decrees for religious ob-
servances. )
"I insist on a renewal of the
Sanhedrin because I believe it
is necessary for the needs of the
hour and for our duty towards
the future," the Minister of Re-
ligion said, speaking at a cele-
bration here dedicated to the
ideals of the Sanhedrin.
Rabbi Maimon quoted the
Talmud as saying that the San-
hedrin would be reestablished in
Tiberias. He said that the Mo-
saic laws have remained un-
changed throughout the cen-
turies largely because there was
no authority to adapt them to
the needs of later ages.

Alizrachi for Expansion
Of ARC Activities

NEW YORK - Expansion of
the activities of the American
Zionist Council to include in
addition to its present political
and public relations functions,
other fields of Zionist endeavor,
was proposed in a resolution
adopted by the national admin-
istrative board of the Mizrachi
Organization of America, made
public by Dr. Pinkhos Churgin,
national Mizrachi president.
The proposal, adopted last
Thursday at a closed "political
action!' session of the religious-
Zionist movement's administra-
tive board, urged that "the base
of the American Zionist Coun-
cil's work be expanded to in-
clude, among other activites,
the combatting of anti-Israel
and anti-Zionist sentiment in
the United States, the organiza-
tion and unification of the
American Jewish_ community,
chalutziut (training of pioneers
for agricultural labor in Israel),
Zionist education, and such
other activities as may be re-
garded as vital to the welfare
and growth of the Zionist move-
ment in the U.S.

UJA Success Possible
Says Goldmann If Local
Allocations Can Be Cut

JERUSALEM, (JTA)-The 1950
United Jewish Appeal campaign
will be more successful than
that of 1949 and will yield more
funds for Israel if the local Jew-
ish welfare funds in various
cities 'of the United States stop
allocating large percentages of
contributed funds for local
needs, Dr. Nathan Goldmann,
chairman of the American sec-
tion of the Jewish Agency exec-
utive declared.
Israel needs a new and strong
Zionist organization for at least
another generation, he insisted.
He suggested that it was the
task of the Israel Government to
establish friendly relations with
the Zionist organization, for the
benefit of both parties.

Javits Proposes NE
Peace, Security Plan

NEW YORK. - Rep. Jacob K.
Javits, on Sunday outlined a
plan for assuring Near East
peace and security and to re-
store the prestige lost by the
United Nations as a result of its
actions on the Jerusalem issue.
He addressed 1,500 Histadrut
leaders and supporters at an
emergency conference at Hotel
Commodore.
Congressman Javits called for
establishment of an "Organiza-
tion of Near East States" which
would include Israel, to be pro-
moted by the United States
through the UN. He asserted
that his plan would (1) elimi-
nate the Jerusalem controversy,
(2) enable Israel and the Arab
States to enter into indirect but
effective peace negotiations on
a sound basis, (3) nullify pos-
sible effects of the present race
for re-arming in the Near East,
(4) facilitate absorption of 751,-
000 Arab refugees, (5) provide
for introduction of President
Truman's Point IV program, and
(6) assure interests of demo-
cratic nations in the Near East.

Drops UJA Libel Suit
In Community's Interest

N E W BRUNSWICK, N. J.,
(JTA) - A $100,000 libel suit
against the United Jewish Ap-
peal of Greater New Brunswick,
the local Jewish Federation and
13 business and professional
men was withdrawn by the
plaintiff, John Fuchs.
.After the court session the
plaintiff stated, "an amicable
settlement - had been reached
and suit was withdrawn in the
interests of the Jewish c ora -
munity." His suit was based on
the report of the 1948 UJA cam-
paign -which, distributed to 2,600
contributors, listed the names
of 17 individuals, including Mr.
Fuchs, alleged to have refused.
to contribute to the drive. -

Italy Extends De Juies

Recognition to Israel

ROME, (JTA) - The Italian
Government extended de jure
recognition to Israel.
The extension of de jure rec-
ognition to Israel by Belgium
and Holland is deplored in Quo-
tidiano, Catholic Organ in
Rome. The newspaper argues
that such recognition conflicts
with the UN plan to place Jeru-
salem -under international trus-
teeship. The paper also criticizes
the Modifications in the Jeru-
salem internationalization plan.
suggested by Roger Garrigan,_
president of the United Nations
Trusteeship Council.
