Cleveland Columnist
To Speak on: Israel

"A Gentile Looks at Israel,"
the story of extraordinary ad-
dances made by the Jews in
their own country, will be re-
lated to Detroit Town Hall
Members by Spencer D. Irwin,
associate editor and foreign
affairs columnist of the Cleve-
land Plain Dealer, at 11 a.m.
Wedneday, Jan. 25, in the
Fisher Theater.
Irwin spent the summer and
early fall in the Holy Land, in
Greece, and in Italy. Returning,
he authored an extended series
of articles on Israel for the
Plain Dealer.
In Israel, the distinguished
newsman interviewed many of
the country's statesmen on their
plans for continued advances
in the living conditions and
management of the new Jewish
homeland.

Sleigh Ride, Movie Nite

To Direct Juniors

A sleigh ride and Old Movie
Night will be held by the Young
People's Club of Temple Beth El
Saturday evening, Jan. 21, and
'Sunday evening. Jan. 29.
The sleigh ride will be held
at Rouge Park Riding Stable,
21900 Joy Road. Reservations
can be secured from social
chairman Lois Goldman and
Elaine Kohn.
Old- Movie Night, Jan. 29, will
feature "The Great Train Rob-
bery" with Charlie Chaplin and
Douglas Fairbanks. The movie
will be followed by refreshments
and dancing.

Shirley Simons has been ap-
pointed executive director of the
Community Service Committee,
the junior division of the Allied
Jewish Campaign, Julian.H. Kro-
lik, president of the Jewish Wel-
fare Federation, announced this
week.
Miss Simons will direct Allied
Jewish campaign activities for
Jewish young adults.
For two years, Miss Simons
has been -a-Ctive on the board of
the Community Service Commit-
tee of the Young Adult Council,
and a member of that commit-
tee's special gifts division. She
also serves as the Community
Service Committee representa-
tive on the Board of the Jewish
Community Center.
She is a graduate of the Uni-
versity of Michigan.

Northwest Youth Group
To Hold 'Sox Dance'

Prizes will go to the sharpest
sox-wearers at the Northwest
Yputh Group's "Sok Dance" to
be held Feb. 11. A twerp (woman
must pay) season affair, girls
are required to invite their es-
corts; the men obliged to wear
flashy sox. •

Northwest YPC will have its
next open social at . the syna-
gogue at 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan.
24. Anyone 18 to 30 is invited.
On Sunday, Jan. 29, the YPC
will hold its annual "Club North-
west." Dancing will be to the
music of Johnny Titus and his
band. There will be a floor show,
including Milt Bert and Barbara
Ann Lover. .
Tickets are on sale by all mem-
bers of the club or they may
be- bought at the door. The
dance is open to all.

nounces an evening of films,

Young Israel mid-winter forums
will be conducted by the Wom-
en's League at 8:30 p.m., Fri-
day, Jan. 20 in the auditorium
of the Young Israel Youth Cen-
ter.
"The' Position of the Jewish
Woman on the American Scene"
will be discussed by. Mesdames
Herman K. Cohen, Samuel H.
Prero, and Meyer Weisenfeld.

Young Israel will be host to a
general social in the building.
Mrs. Philip J. Foxman is chair-
man of the social committee.
Sunday evening, Jan. 22, the
Young Adults of Young Israel
will hold their first meeting of
the year Plans for the Purim
Carnival to be held in March
will be outlined. The Young
Adults will begin a ping-Lpong
tournament.
The first meeting of parents
of Cub and Brownie Scouts will
be held in the Young Israel
building at 7:30 p.m., Monday,
Jan. 23.
The spring term of the Adult
Institute begins Feb. 7, and reg-
