Morgenthau Given 'Freedom Torch'

NEW YORK, (JTA)—Israel's
"freedom Torch," sent by Pre-
mier David Ben Gurion to Henry
Morgenthau, Jr., general chair-
man of the United Jewish Ap-
peal, was presented to Morgen-
thau by Israel Consul-General
Arthur Lourie, acting for Ben
Gurion, at the Israel Consulate
here.
The torch, flown to New York
from Israel for the presentation
ceremony, 'lit beacons through-
out the Jewish state to signal
the attainment by Israel of its
1,000,000th J e wish citizen. The
"Freedom. Torch" was carried

ship and staff of non-Jewish cooperating social service agen-

Thursday evening—Reception for members of Mothers'
Clubs. Mrs. Sidney J. Allen, chairman of arrangements; Mrs.
Ida Drapkin, dean of Mothers' Club Council, program chair-
man.
Saturday, 8:30 p.m.—Teen-age barn dance and rally.
All week—Exhibit of works by Detroit Jewish artists.

rie, Morgenthau announced
that it would tour major cities
throughout the country, where
it will be kindled to mark the
opening of local campaigns on
behalf of the United Jewish Ap-

peal.
The Freedom Torch is made

of bronze, mounted on a carved
wooden staff. It has a menorah
in bronze bas-relief on one side.
Below is the insignia of the Is-
rael Army.

age lounge and nursery. The
former has walls done in dark
green, pale yellow and Chinese
red, with furniture to blend.
Four drapery samples will be
hung at the Windows, and teen-
agers will be asked to select
their favorites, to complete the
furnishings. A coke-bar is to be
installed at one end of the
lounge.
The nursery, in tr aditional
pink and blue, will intrigue pre-
school, tots with its story-book
tiles, set into the linoleum floor,
and extensive bulletin board
space for pictures.

Samuel Hechtman and Pauls
Tilds. Sol King and Saul Saul-
son of Albert Kahn, Associates,
designed the building.
The new branch was made
possible by. the United Jewish
Charities, which bought the
land, the Allied Jewish Cam-
paign, funds from which • paid
construction costs, and the Jew-
ish Welfare Federation a n d
United Foundation (Community
Chest) which provide deficit
financing to meet operating
costs.
