WASHINGTON - (JTA) - The centennial celebration of the b i r t h of Samuel Gompers, British-born Jewish labor lead- er, first president of the Amer- ican Federation of Labor, was opened here with a dinner ad- dressed by President Truman, Vice President Alben W. Bark- ley and leaders of the labor movement in this country. President Truman, in a sur- prise appearance at the dinner, attended by more than 1,000 guests, lauded Gompers for his "great contribution to the wel- fare of this great country of ours." He told the gathering that he considered. Gompers "labor's great statesman" and "the originator of the great movement to set labor free."
