Young Israel Intensifies Recreation
Program for Youth in Dexter Area

PROPOSED YOUNG ISRAEL BUILDING, DESIGNED '
BY LOUIS G. REDSTONE ARCHITECT

The Young Israel Youth Center,
deSigned by Louis G. Redstone,
arcbitect, .now. under ,.construc
tion at Dexter and Fullerton,:will
be the most modern building of
its type in the community, - Sam,
uel W. P,latt, vice chairman of
the building committee stated
this 'week. With favorable weath-
er conditions, construction can be
completed by the middle of
spring, he added. "Young Israel
of Detroit realizes that a youth
center, which will have recrea-
tional and athletic facilities, club
rooms, arts and crafts, a library,
and accommodations for social
functions, is most urgently need-
ed in the Dexter area," Platt de-
clared.
Until the Center is completed,
Young Israel has launched a pro-
gram to organize youth groups in
this section. These groups will
meet temporarily at Yeshivath
Beth Yehudah, Dexter and Cort-
land, or in private homes.
The building committee, head-
ed by David I. Berris and Platt,
and including Harry L. Blitz,
Mrs. Hyman R. Cohen, Solomon
B. Cohen, Charles T. Gellman,
and Abbe A. Levi, urges the gen-
eral community to lend support
to this project.
The Hanukah youth carnival,
presented by all youth groups of
Young Israel, will take place at
7:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 1, at
Bnai Moshe. The program in-
cludes Palestinian movies and
slides, comedies, Hanukah plays,
games, choral groups, and re-
freshments.
The first form of Young Israel
Institute of Jewish Studies, meet-
ing Tuesday evenings at Central
High School, will end Jan. 18.
The institute committee already
is at work planning additional
courses which will be offered for
the spring term, scheduled Tues-
day .evening, Feb. 1.
Courses now offered are.- basic
Hebrew ; contemporary conversa-
tional Hebrew; Eretz Israel, its
history, geography and central

Bnai Moshe Starts
Netv Members' Drive

Congregation Bnai Moshe will
launch a membership campaign
, on Jan. 2.
The membership class will be
named after the late Jacob Gelb-
man, who was a prominent offi-
cer an4member of the congrega-
tion for many years prior to his
death in 1943.
Morris Direnfeld, a member of
the board, will be chairman of
the drive, with Andrew Iczko-
vitz, chairman of the membership
committee, as co-chairman. Cap-
tains are: Irwin Tamler, Eugene
Brumer, Milton Weisz, Eugene
Weiss, Theo. Curtis, Alfred
Deutsch, Harry J. Gunsberg, Ar-
nold Rosman, Sigmund Jaulus
and David Levi.
Sam Freedman, congregation
president, announces that pub-
licity for the drive will be
handled by a committee composed
of Sol Grand, Sam Freedman,
Eugene Weiss, Harry Gunsberg,
Theodore Curtis and N. L. Welch.
Rabbi Moses Lehrman will assist
this committee.
Certificates of merit will be
awarded to those who obtain the
largest number of members.
The campaign will continue
until March 31 and will be con-
cluded with a victory dinner on
April 10, when new members
will be initiated.

Hon. Arthur C. A. Liverhant,
secretary of the Israeli Mission
to the United States in Washing-
ton, D. C., will be the guest
speaker on Friday, Jan. 7, at 8:30
p.m. at Congregation Bnai David,
to mark the opening of the win-
ter season of Friday night gath-
erings.
Mr. Liverhant will speak on
the subject "The State . of Is-
rael." He is an outstanding per-
sonality, a splendid orator, and a
recognized leader with a fine
background of service to the Jew-
ish people in Israel.
Rabbi Joshua Speika will in-
troduce the speaker, Cantor Hy-
man Adler and the Bnai David
choir under the direction of
Harry Siegel, will lead the sing-
ing of appropriate Sabbath songs.
Members of the -Board of
Trustees of the Synagogue will
act as ushers, and members of
the Bnai David Sisterhood will
be hostesses at the social hour
which follow the program.

Rabbi Adler to Speak
To Northwest Women

Rabbi Morris Adler will be
quest speaker at the meeting of
the Northwest Sisterhood Wed-
nesday evening,, Jan. 5. His topic
will be "An American , Jew
Speaks His Mind."
Ruth Rosender,. daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Maurice Rosender
will present piano selections. The
Men's Club of the congregation
and husbands of sisterhood mem-
bers will be special guests.
The Sisterhood's annual donor
luncheon is scheduled for Feb. 9.
