'48 Report Shows
625 Children Spent
Vacations at FAC
Vacation provisions for 625
different Jewish boys and girls
of Detroit are described in the
final report of the Fresh Air So-
ciety for 1948.
Fifty-one per cent of the camp-1
ers_xeCeived full or part camper-
ships, while 49 per cent paid the
full rate. The remainder of the
camp budget • was made - up by
full cooperation from the entire
community, according to the
statement of Barney Smith, FAS
president.
`-The Detroit Community Chest
meets 25 per cent of the budget
and, in addition, the Montefiore
Lodge, C,ouzens Fund, Mendel-
son Fund, Joseph Mailman,
Sheruth League and Silverman
post of the Jewish War Veterans
made contributions which ena-
bled youngsters to vacation at the
Fresh Air .Camp at Brighton,
Mich. -
Irwin Shaw, -camp director, re-
ported that 1948 was the best
of the post-war seasons, due to
the unusually high caliber of
the counseling staff, led by as-
sistant director Robert Luby.
Shaw stressed the capability of
the department heads, program
specialist and social case worker,
noting the special emphasis on
Jewish content in the camp pro-
gram.
Only handicap to the success
of the camp season, according
to the report, was the shortage
of housing and physical facili-
ties. Although a program of cap-
ital improvements for tie camp-
site already has begun, increased
facilities are still necessary to
care for the community's camp-
ing needs adequately.

A new Emile Zola has arisen
to champion the cause of the
Jewish underdog—Israel. He is
T. 0. THACKREY, co-publisher
and co-editor of the New York
Post-Home News. While the gen-
tlemen of the world press sat idly
by, watching from the sidelines
as certain members of the United
Nations tried to eradicate the
infant Jewish nation, Thackrey was
the one who spoke up in the name
of justice. He waged. and 'is still
waging a one-man fight for Is-
rael's admission to the United ,
Nations.

An Event of Outstanding Importance
This year's observance of the Festival of Lights, the first Hanukah since the establishment of the State
of Israel, is in many respects similar to the Hanukah first celebrated in Jerusalem 2113 years ago after
the heroic victory of the Maccabees. Today, as th en, Israel is rejoicing in its regained independence.
Sunday, January 16, 2:30 p.m.
Today, as then, Israel is called upon to defend its territorial integrity and to safeguard its liberty in
a Maccabean struggle of the, few against many in the cause of right against might.
In Main Auditorium of Masonic Temple
The modern Maccabees who are, like those of yore, "ready either to live or die nobly," fought
for and won the right of uprooted and homeless J ews to enter Israel and to be settled on the land.
This inalienable and sovereign right is now being fu Ily exercised by the State of Israel and the high
purposes of resettlement are progressing daily, tha nks to the implementation of the "Land for Israel"
