VON MANNSTEIN
meat following his conviction an
nine war crimes charges includ-
ing failure to protect Jews arid
other Soviet citizens who were
shot, hinged, gassed and
drowned by •Gestapo troops op-
erating in his command area
during the war.
Von Mannstein was acquitted
of eight other counts, including
charges that he authorized and
permitted the mass killing of
Jews and other racial groups
and that he authorized and per-
mitted the transfer of Jews to
Gestapo installations knowing
that the Jews would be extermi-
nated. The Nazi Field Marshal
refused to plead for mercy. The
British have announced that
von Mannstein's trial, the 938th
of a German war criminal by a
British military court, ends the
war crimes prosecution in this
zone. . .
• WARSAW, (JTA)-Nine Poles
charged with war crimes were
sentenced to death and a tenth
to 15 years imprisonment, by
various Polish courts The spe-
cific charge was turning Jews
over to the occupying Nazi au-
thorities, who murdered them,
or committing the executions
themselves.
Germans Ask Removal
Of All DPs But Jews
.STUTTGART, (JTA)-After a
stormy session, the Wuerttem-
berg-Baden Parliament, in the
U. S. zone of Germany, request-
ed American High Commissioner
John J. McCloy to remove from
Germany all DPs except the
Jews. Provincial Minister of In-
terior Fritz Ulrich declared that
with the exception of the Jews
"most of the so-called DPs co-
operated with the Nazis."
The Interzonal Association of
Jewish Communities-represent-
ing the communities in Western
Germany-meeting here, has re-
jected a proposal by West Ger-
man President Theodor Heuss
and Chancellor Konrad Ade-
nauer that an office on Jewish
affairs be set up to advise the
Bonn Government. Instead, the
Association formally suggeSted
to the government that all prob-
lems concerning Jews be dis-
cussed with the democratically
elected representatives of the
Jewish community.

Germans Asked to Act in
Repudiation of Nazism
NEW YORK, (JTA) - The
world Jewish Congress issued a
statement calling upon the Ger
man people "to express in deeds"
their repudiation of Nazism and
anti-Semitism instead of issuing
verbal assurances to Jews.
The Congress statement was
issued in reply to recent con-
ciliatory remarks by President
Theodor Heuss and Chancellor.
Konrad Adenauer of the West
German Republic, in which tri-
bute was paid to the contribu-
tions made by Jews to Germany
in the arts, sciences and litera-
ture. President Heuss also re
ferred to the "collective shame"
of the Germans for the exter-
mination of the Jews, but has
never accepted the charge of
collective guilt.
