Midrasha Winter
Quarter to Begin
On January 10

The winter quarter of the Mid-
rasha will begin Tuesday, Jan.
10.
Registration will begin. Tues-
day, Jan. 3, continuing through
Jan. 10th.
The following courses are of-
fered:
Hebrew, primary, intermediate
and advanced; Yiddish, primary,
intermediate a n d advanced;
Bible, Ezekiel and Mishle from
the Hebrew text, with medieval
, and modern commentaries;
Ezekiel in Yiddish using as text
Yehoash's translation; - the Pen-
tateuch in English; Mishna;
Modern Hebrew literature, with
special stress on the- works of
Lamdan and Greenberg; Yid-
dish literature, an interpretation
of the works of Sholem Aleichem
and Y. L. Peretz; a survey of Jew-
ish literature in English; Jew-
ish sociology, the development
and present structure of -the
American Jewish community;
Jewish philosophy, an interpre-
tation of representative Jewish
thinkers; Artcraft, workship de-
veloped around Jewish themes;
and Jewish folk dances.
The staff will include Joseph
Comay, Dr. Joseph W. Eaton, M.
Haar, Rabbi Max Kapustin, Solo-
mon Kasdan, Jacob Mathis, Mrs.
Blossom Neuschatz, Morris Plaf-
kin, Norman-. Ruttenberg, Naomi
Riith Schlyfestone, Rabbi Jacob
E. Segal, Samuel Sigal and Wolf
Snyder.
These courses are offered
Tuesday and Thursday each
week, from 8 to 10 p.m. In addi-
tion, for women, classes are of-
fered in Hebrew, Bible and the
Land of Israel on Tuesday and
Wednesday morning.

Community Service Unit
Adds Four to Board

Chosen at the Dec. 8 board
meeting of the Community Ser-
f vice Committee of the Young
Adult Council were four new
board members, Albert M. Cal-
man,_ chairman of the commit-
tee, announced. The new ap-
pointees, who will bring the
total membership of the board
to 35, are: - Brewster Broder,
Marilyn J. Kopel, Leo Majzels
and Elaine Rubac,h.
After the beginning of the
year, the new members will at-
tend their first meeting of the
board, which has the respon-
sibility of conducting the Allied
Jewish - Campaign for the young
people of Detroit.

Gratz Unit Fund Dance
Slated for January 15

Rebecca Gratz Auxiliary, Bnai
Brith Young Women, will pre-
sents its annual fund-raising af-
fair at 9 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 15,
at the Jewish Community Cen-
ter.
The setting will be in night-
club .style, and the affair has
been named "Night of Enchant-
ment." Dancing throughout the
evening will be to the music of
Dick Stein's orchestra. Enter-
tainment during intermission
will be featured.

Masada will preient Marshall
Shulman, press officer of the
United States delegation at the
United Nations, Sunday after-
noon, Jan. 15, at Shaarey Zedek.
Shulman, a native Detroiter,
will speak on the latest events
at Lake Success.
Members of Masada are in-
vited to attend without charge.
Others will be admitted at a
nominal fee.
Masada's athletic committee
has begun plans for a series of
men's and women's soft-ball
teams to play during the Sum-
mer months. For information,

AUXILIARY, Dec. 18, past pres-
ident Helen Kogan presented
Samuel Rhodes, president of the
JWV Memorial Home Associa-
tion, with an additional dona-
tion of $100. This brings the
auxiliary's total to date to $375.
A latke party for members of
Kogan Auxiliary and their hus-
bands was held at the home of
Lillian Bricker, Dec. 29.

sored a hat show Thursday eve-
ning, presented by Mrs. Ethel
Ackerman, of 7738 W. McNich-
ols. Guests for the 'evening
were Maurice Rose, Ginsburg-
Rosenberg and ,Raymond Bloch

LT. ELI LEVIN AUXILIARY
held a successful luncheon and
meeting at the home of Lillian
Braunstein, 2741 Doris. A party
was discussed to raise funds for
a pledge for furnishings for the
JWV home. Rose Cantor was
elected auxiliary chairman for
the souvenir book of the JWV
ball. Florence Leinoff was elec-
ted chairman for aid-to-Israel.
The next meeting will be held
at the home of Goldie Goodgall,
2712 Richton, at 8 p.m. Tuesday,
Jan. 3.

STREET COUNCIL CENTER will
hold FILM PROGRAMS one

Detroiter Gets U. S.
Grant for Philosophy
Research in France

Bnai Brith Foundation
Cites U.-M. Hillel Drive

Contributions of $9,888 by stu-
dents at the University of Mich-
igan Hillel Foundation in its
1948-49 drive were cited by the
National Bnai Brith Hillel Foun-
dation among other large Hillel
totals.
A total of $176,132 has been
contributed by students on 67
campuses. Chief beneficiary of
the drives is the united Jewish
Appeal, but allocations were also
made by student committees to
numerous other organizatiOns.

give a New Year's Eve party at
the Cultural Center at 10 p.m.
Saturday, Dec. 31.
Jules Yanover and his trio
will furnish the dinner music
and afterwards will play for

The mid-winter concert will

John M. Hirschfield, 29-year-
old son of Mr. and Mrs. Milton
C. Hirschfield of 18644 Indiana,
will leave New York for Europe
on Jan. 4, to continue his re-
search in cultural arts at the
Institute of France in Paris.
A 'graduate of Wayne Uni-
versity, Hirschfield received his
master's degree at the Univer-
sity of Chicago and was then
awarded a roving scholarship to
continue . his studies in philoso-
phy in France and Italy.
