Howe's Monumental History Reviews
Zionism, Works of Nordau, Freud.

Quincy Howe has begun an
impressive three-volume monu-
mental world history with his
"A World History of Our Own
Times : From the Turn of the
Century to the 1918 Armistice."
Published by Simon and Schus-
ter (1230 6th Ave., New York
20),:it proposes to cover the first
half of the 20th century, depict-
ing events and personalities and
drawing conclusions to inter-
relate the two on a world scale.
A magnificent work in every
sense, Howe's history is impres-
sive from the point of view os.
the thorough search made by
the author for historical facts
and his sincere effort to be fair
in every respect.
Scrupulously accurate in deal-
ing with the details of his his-
tory, Howe does not hesitate to
condemn where issues or per-
sonalities are involved, or to
commend where praise is in
order.

There is hardly a group of
people anywhere that will not
find its interests touched upon
in this great work.. For Jew-
ish readers there are many
items of outstanding import-
ance in Howe's history. Thus,
in dealing with Austria, he
devotes considerable space to
a discussion of the rise of two
great movements under the
influence of two brilliant men:
Psychoanalysis and its creatnr
Dr. Sigmund Freud, and Zion-
ism and its founder Dr. Theo-
dor Herzl.

Howe discusses with marked
understanding the work of Dr.
Max Nordau, especially his "De-
generation" which aroused
worldwide controversy and cre-
ated conflicting schools of
thought in that era.
The Alfred Dreyfus Case and
the rise of Emile Zola to the
defense of the innocently-accus-
ed French-Jewish army officer

Argentine City Names
Street for State of Israel

ROSARIO, Argentina,
(JTA)- — The municipality of
Rosario, second largest city
in Argentina, named one of
its streets "Calle Estado de
Israel" (Street of the State
of Israel.) The resolution to
name a street in honor of the
Jewish state was introduced
by Dr. Varela Silyeira, pres-
ident of the municipal coun-
cil.

is another subject for discus-
sion in this fine book.
Later on, there is important
reference to the issuance of the
Balfour Declaration and to the
internal British conflicts involv-
ing the attitudes towards the
Arabs by the Foreign and Co-
lonial Offices of the British gov-
ernment.
Students of American history
will be deeply interested in
Howe's delineations of otir Pres-
idents, especially Teddy Roose-
velt and Woodrow Wilson, and
they will learn a great deal
about the behind - the - scenes
machinations concocted by our
politicians:
Illustrated with many photo-
graphs and drawings, Howe's
book should find a ready re-
sponse among all history stu-
dents. Those who have read the
first volume await the appear-
ance of the following two vol-
umes with great anxiety.
