paign Sunday, in the Scottish Rite Cathedral 'of Masonic,

stein, director of the cultural division of Histadrut, and Dr.
Frank Kingdon, lecturer and journalist of the New York
Post.

.

With its theme the entry of

_ Kingdon Lauds Histadrut
In opening remarks chairman
Lieberman noted that furniture
division workers already have
pledges equalling their 1949
total; that this year's solicita-
tions can and must be raised
over those of years before.
"There are many Jews waiting
to be approached before they
contribute; we must touch this
vein for Histadrut."
Dr. Kingdon presented a stir-
ring picture of the worth of His-
tadrut; taking the audience to
Israel, letting them "touch on
any artery of Israel, and find
Histadrut working there. In an-
swering the call of -Histadrut
you are not a stranger. There is
a strong bond holding you to
it."
Dramatic Rome Reunion
"In Rome several years ago,
on the route to Israel, I wit-
nessed the accidental reunion
of two men. One, a wealthy New
York Jew. The other, a miser-
able DP on his way to Israel.
The American Jew was heart-
sick at sight of this DP and his
fellows.
Can Israel weld a nation from
material like this?' he asked.
But in a dramatic reunion be-
tween the two risen, both natives
.of Pinsk and Heder compan-
ions years before, he changed
his story. 'It .might have been
mySelf, not him, going to Israel,
beaten and half-dead to start
life anew.' That could be the .
case of many of you, Kingdom
declared, "starting life anew
through the Histadrut and Is-
rael."
-
He dealt with Jerusalem, touch-
ing on Israel - Arab acceptance
of the status quo, and declar-
ing that the Jews will not accept
internationalization. "It is a
strange sight," he said, "that of
those bed-fellows: Mohamme-
dan Arabs, Chinese, and - Com-
munist Russia and her sattelites,
joining with the Catholic Latin
American countries and France
and Australia in _high fervor for
the holy shrines of Christendom
and voting internationalization."
Histadrut Leads the Way
Speaking in Yiddish, Dr.- Bur-.
stein pictured Israel "in a glass
cage," the object of keen scru- )
tiny by the entire world. Ninety
per cent of Israel is desolate; un-
occupied. undeveloped. Histad-
rut is leading the way into those
areas; the Galil, Elat and the
Negev," he said. •
"Private capital will follow
Histadrut. In 'this work U.S.
Jewry is the partner of Hista-
drut, to make Israel the home' of
Jews the world over -seeking its
haven."
Dr. Burstein pictured the mi-
gration of thousands of Jews
from Yemen, Africa and Europe
making their way to Israel.
Speaking later he told of Hista-
drut's work among • the 80,000

Jews in the reception camps of
Israel today.
"Histadrut utilizes every mo-
ment. In the camps new arrivals
are oriented to ISrael life. and
culture, to ease their adjustment
to the country. They are urged
to enter cooperative enterprises,
in town or country.
Mascha Benya Sings
!flfisual-aide methods, lectures
and formal classes instruct them
in the language; geography of
Israel, its industries, elements of
cooperativi" Hiring and the work-
ings of Histadrut. Every method
is used, even to the formation
of clubs and dramatic grOups
for their relaxation, and libra-
ries are at their disposal."
Highlights of the rally in-
cluded selections of Israel and
Yiddish melodies sung by so-
prano Mascha Benya, accompa-
nied on the piano by Rebecca
Frohman. Habonim youth par-
ticipated in the program, pre-
senting a tableau honoring the
millionth Jew's entry into Israel.
S a m Rabinovitz, Histadrut
campaign executive director, an-
nounced that there will be a
regular campaign rally on
Thursday 'evening, Dec. 29, at
the Labor Zionist Institute. Phil
Slomovitz, Editor of The Jew-
ish News, will be the guest
speaker.

Greenstein Reveals
German Moves to
Halt Restitution

WASHINGTON—(JTA) —
Strong "protective" organiza-
tions bent on wrecking Allied
plans to return stolen and con-
fiscated property to victims of
the Nazis have emerged in the
United States zone of Germany,
it was stated in a report by
Harry Greenstein, former ad-
viser on Jewish affairs to the
American authorities in Ger- -
many, made public by the De-
partment of the Army.
Expressing concern for the
military government's restitution
program the report stated that
organizations, fed on still-ram-
pant anti-Semitism, have band-
ed together with the "avowed
aim" of mobilizing sentiment
against the restitution law. He
observed that the law was "ex-
ceedingly unpopular" with the
Germans.
Greenstein's report, which
covers the period from Febru-
ary to Oct. 31, 1949, noted that
the restitution law had been
promulgated by the military
government after efforts to ob-
tain passage of such laws by
the German states had failed.
He asserted that the restitution
program in Austria "bears even
closer surveillance.
The report added that hatred
and hostility. against Jews in
Germany will persist for many
years stressing that it "is Im-
perative that the occupying
powers recognize in anti-Semi-
tism the rejection of the demo-
cratic principle and the un-
mistakable sign of, the resurg-
ence of. German natnonalism, in
its most vicious form."

British Bank Offers
Jewish Agency Loan

LONDON— (JTA)—A large
British banking institution has
proferred a considerable loan to
the Jewish Agency for develop-
ment purposes. It was reported
that the Israel Government has
notified insurance companies
that they may now invest in
Israel enterprises, government
and private.
Meir Grossman, member of
the Jewish Agency executive, left
for 13russels on the first lap of
a tour of Western European
countries in the interest of pro-
moting investment in Israel.

Ten Years Activities
For- Education Reviewed

NEW YORK, (JTA)-The in-
fluence which the American As-
sociation for Jewish Education
has exercised for the 10 years of
its existence upon Jewish edu-
cation in the United States was
emphasized by Michael A. Sta.-
vitsky, president of the organ-
ization., at a dinner marking the
tenth anniversary of the Asso-
ciation.
Sen. Paul Douglas, of
told the guests -that the- estab-
lishment of Israel had not cre-
ated a double loyalty within
American Jews. He added that
the issue of double loyalty "could
arise only if the American com-
munity as a whole forsook_ its
own traditions or if Jews forsook
theirs."
