Varieties
It was good to see George Jessel joining the chorus of voices
against Sholem Asch's Mary . . . It is hard to believe, as Jessel
says, that Asch really believes the words he put into the mouths
of Mary and the simple Galileans . . . Yet his record speaks for
itself . . . Jessel sounds quite convincing when he speaks of Asch's
new moods . . . He is less than that when he refers to Yiddish as
a jargon . . . To speak of Yiddish as a jargon betrays either lack
of knowledge or acceptance of outmoded cliches.
Sholem Aleichem's "Tevye the Dairyman," a Yiddish master-
piece incidentally, is headed for -the Broadway stage by one of the
leading American producers.
The Institute of Jewish Affairs, the research arm of the
World Jewish Congress, just published a hair-raising little book
about Nazi atrocities . . . Authored by Anatole Goldstein and
edited by Maximilian Hurwitz, the volumn, titled "Operation Mur-
der," is an historical document that reads like a dirge.
Art and Artists
The noted violinist Isaac Stern loves to talk about his musical
tour of Israel where he played to record audiences . .. He tells
the story that after an afternoon recital at Tel Aviv he asked a
cab driver to take him to Ben Gurion's home . . . The cabbie
started a conversation with his passenger and soon enough he
found out that his fare was the very man whom he applauded a
few minutes before . . . When the taxi arrived at its destination
the driver said in a plaintive voice: "Please don't let the Premier
fascinate you with his voice. He is quite loquacious and once he
has you under his spell you may find it difficult to tear yourself
away in time for the next performance" .. . When Stern left the
Premier's home an hour or so later he found the cabbie waiting
for him with a ticket for the evening performance.
Is a Jewish artist who became converted from Judaism eligible
for membership in a Jewish art club? . . . Jewish artists in Paris
resolved the question last week when they rejected the member-
ship application of the noted painter Marc Schwartz ... Schwartz,
son of an extremely religious merchant at Lodz, deserted his fold
before the war and severed all relations with his Jewish past . • .
One day the Jewish artist club received a letter from the convert
asking that he be admitted to club membership . . . In the letter
he said though he was still a devout Catholic, the rise of nazism
had drawn him close to the Jewish people and that he considered
himself a Jew by nationality . . . The club turned him down with
the suggestion that he first become a Jew and that then it would
first have to be decided whether he qualifies for membership.

21,000 Leave Israel
Camps in November

TEL AVIV— (JTA) — The
Jewish A g e nc y announced
that 21,000 immigrants left
the camps in November and
13,000 entered them. About 40
percent of those leaving the
camps chose to settle on the
land.
A local chemical prepara-
tion using tar oil assured that
25,000 immigrants still living
in tents were comparatively
dry during the recent down-
pours. The w eat herp roof
coating was invented by
chemists working in coopera-
tion with the camp manage-
ment department of the Jew-
ish Agency.
A new settlement was
founded in the Negev as a
shelter for 50 families who
had come from Tunisia. A
string- of additional new vil-
lages will soon be formed in
the same area.

One of the most unusual
sport stories of the year broke
last week. Benny Friedman,
athletic director at Brandeis
University and former All-
American at the University of
Michigan, was slated to become
head football coach at Holy
Cross College. The story reached
print because Coach Bill Os-
manski, of the famous Catholic
institution, sent Benny an S 0 S
message to help him prepare the
team before the Colgate contest,

Benny went down to Worcester,
Mass., and gave Osmanski the
advantage of his coaching ex-
perience, which undoubtedly
helped the Crusaders to knock
off Colgate. When Friedman
was seen on the Holy Cross Col-
lege campus, the whisper grew
to a crescendo that Benny was
slated to replace Osmanski. La-
ter Friedman denied the rumor.

'Molly and Sabbath
Queen'; New Juvenile

Sadie Rose Weilerstein, al-
ready widely known for her ex-
cellent Jewish children's stories,
has produced another splendid
book—"Molly and the Sabbath
Queen."• Published by Behrman
House, New York, the book is
beautifully illustrated by Anne
Ferril Folsom.
It is a story about little Molly
who was faced with the probleM
of taking over the duties of the
household when her mother was
called away on an emergency.
Meanwhile the Sabbath was ap-
proaching. Little Molly began to
mop up, prepare the table, get
the household in order for the
coming of the Sabbath Queen.
There were the little brothers to
care for, but she managed and
her reward was a hug and being
named Malkah—the Queen of
Sabbath.
There is a fine Jewish touch
to this story and its simplicity
and description of all details
will make it valuable in teach-
ing the Sabbath rules to young-
sters. Mothers will find delight
in reading the story to younger
children who are unable to read
, it for themselves.
