Over 250,000 Jews will have reached Israel this year. The UPA de- rives its funds from the United Jewish Appeal campaign. Of the sum spent Judge Roth- enbery reported that $58,460,941 went for initial care and reha- bilitation of immigrants, includ- ing clothing and medical care and their maintenance in camps. Immigrant social problem cases —orphans, widows with small children, invalids — numbered over 30,000 people requiring spe- cial care, and in many instances hospitalization. In 1950 the Joint Distribution Committee joins UPA in the care of these "hard- core" cases. UPA agencies spent $11,128,076 on immigrant housing during 1949; over 11,000 units were com- pleted. At this month's _end an additional 24.000 units, each housing an average of three im- migrants, will be under con- struction. The continued influx, however, Judge Rothenberg de- clared, will still require more than 90,000 immigrants to live in camps while awaiting perman- ent resettlement. Agricultural development, in- cluding establishment. of new settlements, and the expansion of those in existence to increase Israel's absorptive potential, cost UPA 829,065,747. Through intensive agricultural and housing programs about 220,000 immigrants were able to leave the camps. Close to 30,000 were integrated in agriculture; over 80,000 were absorbed into other sectors of the country's economy. Land acquistion through the Jewish National Fund—a UPA constituent body—accounted for $15,837,000 to cover the cost of TOM'S GARAGE JERUSALEM, (JTA) — T h e Jewish Agency announces that the ZIONIST ACTIONS COM- MITTEE will meet in Jerusalem in April, 1950.
