The executive committee of
the Zionist Organization of De-
troit, at a meeting held Dec. 7
at the Wilshire, went on record
endorsing a statement prepared
by James I. Ellmann calling up-
on the parent organization—the
Zionist Organization of America
— to revitalize its forces in be-
half of Israel in order not to
temporize the Jewish state's de-
velopment.
Ellmann, in his statement,
which was submitted to the ZOA
as a code of principles from De-
troit Zionists, outlined the pres-
ent position in Israel and de-
clared: "Nationhood has not
ended the struggle (to fulfill the
Zionist purpose) ; it has only
given us the privilege of assum-
ing and solving greater prob-
lems, the ,opportunity of meet-
ing new challenges."

EPHRAIM GOMBERG

Allied Jewish Appeal on Jana 1, it
was announced here by Samuel
H. Daroft, president.
Having served as executive
director of the Allied Jewish
Appeal since January, 1948,
Gomberg now assumes the duties
carried by Dr. Peiser, who re-
tires Jan. 1. He will retain the
post of executive director, in
which capacity he guided the
administrative and fund-raising
affairs of the Appeal, and will
take on all other executive func-
tions.
Gomberg is a graduate of the
University of Michigan and was
a member of the Detroit Tithes
staff. He held social service
posts in Detroit and New York
before taking his Philadelphia
position.

Harold Goodman has been ap-
pointal chairman of the $50-
per-plate dinner of the Detroit
Chapter, American Technion
Society, Leon Kay, president,
disclosed.

The dinner, to be held Jan.
14, will be highlighted by an
address by Dr. Harold C. Urey,
a national sponsor of the so-
ciety, and world famous nu-
clear physicist who helped
make the first atomic bomb.

Dr. Urey, now a professor at
the Institute for Nuclear Studies
.of the University of Chicago, tes-
tified in the Congressional hear-
ing on shipments of uranium to
Russia. He discounted reports
of the 1943-44 shipments and
declared that the uranium, then,
was of "virtually no interest, in-
ternationally, for explosive pur-
poses."

People in the U. S. use an av-
erage of two and one-half bil-
lion pounds of soap every year.
