NEW YORK Private enter-
prise, which controlled most of
Palestine industries before the
State of Israel was established,
continues its dominant pciSition
under Israel's Labor Govern-
ment, according to statistics
published in the current issue
of Economic Horizons, monthly
publication of the Economic De-
partment of the Jewish Agency.
Official data obtained from
the Government of Israel re-
veals that private industry was
awarded 90% of the total value
of all import licenses issued by
the Israel Government for the
period from May 15 to Sept. 15.

As far as the eye can see, men, women and children kit Israel formed a continuous
marching column as they paraded to the tomb of Theodor Herzl, carrying signs and a ban-
ner reading "If I forgivt. thee, 0 Jerusalem." A mass oath was taken at the tomb by the
50,000 people who protested against the internationalization of Jerusalem.

mission to the UN, was a Marine
who participated in campaigns
in the Pacific. His ability to ob-
serve conditions has stood him
in good stead in the writing of
his war novel, "Mask of Glory,"
which has been published by
Whittlesey House, McGraw-Hill
Book Co., New York 18. The real-
ism of his book and the beauty
of his decriptions c a use his
novel to stand out as one of the
finest books about the war.
Glenn Manson, the young Pa-
lish-American who wanted to be
a scientist, instead learned how
to kill. A year's experience in his
life, his association with his
buddies, his bewilderment are
among the motivating forces
which inspired the writing of
this fine story. War is indicted in
this realistic expose of the hor-
rors of the battlefields. But the
novel itself also is a study of
developing Americanism. Glenn's
parents changed their names,
broke away from the foreign in-
fluences of their birth. The en-
tire story is a merging of war's
influences and the urge for com-
plete integration into American
life by immigrants.
Dan Levin has written a pow-
erful book. It deserves to make
the best seller grade.

Murderers of Romanian Jews Denied Appeal
BUCHAREST, (JTA)—An ap-
peal by seven former members
of the wartime Rumanian police
force who, in 1941, executed 600
Jews in the town of Orhei, in
Bessarabia, against varying
terms of imprisonment was de-
nied by the Rumanian Supreme
Court. The jail terms range
from 15 to 25 years.
The defendants were sent to
Orhei to maintain law and order
after it was reoccupied by the
Rumanian Army. On arrival
there they rounded up 650 Jews,
executed 600 of them and ship-
ped the remainder to a Nazi
death camp.
