Mrs. Leonard's 'Jewish Cookery'
Hailed for Its Tried Recipes

For a number of years, Mrs.
Leah W. Leonard has beep con-
ducting recipe columns in Jew-
ish newspapers. She has became
known as an outstanding au-
thority on Jewish cooking and
her book, "Jewish Cookery," just.
published by Crown publishers,
419 Fourth Ave., New York 16,
justifies the praise her work has
been receiving.
Mrs. Leonard, who is the wife
of the well-known Jewish social
worker, Oscar Leonard, has com-
piled traditional recipes. Her
suggested menus, the special
holiday foods, the accumulation
of numerous styles of Jewish
cooking — Hungarian, Russian,
Polish, German, Israeli—elevate
her work to an important place
in its field.
Her recipes have been tested
and she has proven every one
of them. The strict laws of kash-
rut are noted, weights and mea-
sures are given, kosher-approved
meat cuts are explained.
Pudding, cordial, wine and
cake recipes are included in this
book. There are suggestions of
all sorts, for all occasions.
Here are two of her recipes
for the current festival.

Knesset Gets Land
Purchase Measure

TEL AVIV, (JTA) — Finance
Minister Eliezer Kaplan intro-
duced in the Knesset a special
bill to empower the government
to establish a "development au-
thority" authorized to lease or
sell immovable property.
Kaplan explained that a full
development authority bill cov-
ering the whole structure of the
project would soon be introduc-
ed, but meanwhile special legis-
lation was urgently required to
legalize the sale of certain prop-
erty to the Jewish National
Fund, also for the acquisition of
land for 150 settlements.

Detroit News Accuracy

On the same page (19—in the
first section) of the Detroit News
on Sunday, apeared two quota-
tions from Jerusalem Mayor
Daniel Auster's statement. The
UP story carried the correct
statement: . "For us the UN
resolution does not exist." But
two columns to the left of this
article, Russell Barnes, in an at-
tempt to analyze the Jerusalem
issue, quoted Auster as saying:
"For us UN does not exist."
Barnes studied journalism at the
University of Michigan but ap-
parently slipped up on a basic
rule: accuracy.

en's Division of the United Jew-
ish Appeal to mobilize American
Jewish Women in the 1950 cam-
paign to meet needs in Israel,
Europe, North Africa and the
United States totalling $272,455,-
800.
She succeeds Mrs. Ernest G.
Wadel of Dallas, Texas, who was

TEL AVIV—(JTA)—Israel will
grant facilities to private inves-
tors prepared to erect factories
and work centers for employing
new immigrants in Galilee and
in the Negev, labor minister
Golda Myerson told representa-
tives of workers' exchanges this
week. Among places listed by
Mrs. Myerson for development
with the aid of private capital
are Lydda, Ramleh, Beersheba
and Ascalon.
David Horowitz, undersecre-
tary for finance, estimated that
total Israel imports for the cur-
rent fiscal year would run to
about $224,000,000 while exports
would total approximately $30,-
800,000. This enormous gap, he
said, called for unremitting pro-
duction and intensification of
output. Otherwise, the popula-
tion must prepare for consider-
able curtailment of essential
commodities, more stringent
austerity and heavier taxation,
he stated.
T h e government's building
program for 1950 has tentative-
ly been fixed at 20,000 units, it
was announced this week. Plans
are being worked out, however,
for additional dwellings. The
