'Ghetto and Jews of Rome'
Guides Jewish Pilgrims

Pilgrimages to Israel make it
possible for many Jews to go to
Rome on their way to the. Holy
Land. The history of the Jews
in Rome by the 19th century
German historian Ferdinand
Gregorovius, recently republished
by Schocken Books, under the
title "The Ghetto and the Jews
of Rome," should serve as a val-
uable guide in directing Jews to
make a study of the position of
their kinsmen in the old Milan
city.
The opening poem in this val-
uable book, "Lament of the
Children of Israel in Rome," was
translated by Randall Jarrell.
The - book was translated by
Moses Hadas.
, Titus' . march through Rome in
triumph over the conquest of
Jerusalem, the life of the Jews
in Rome throughout- the cen-
turies, their relations with the
church, the activities of the
people in the ghetto are vividly
described.
In the long run, Jewry sur-
vived. Bernard Lazare described
it in these words: "This tiny
Jewish colony has seen the
Roman Republic and the' Empire
fall; it has wept at :Caesar's
death, it has seen the Barbari-
an come; a n d the Church
build itself. At the beginning
of the century it is kill there,
having merely, in the course of
two thousand years, crossed the
Tiber." This remarkable truth
prompted Gregorovius to write
his fine history.
