Dreyfus Affair, Birth
Of Israel Among Great
Treasures of Reporting

In the preface to "A Treasury
of Great Reporting", edited by
Professors Louis L. Snyder and
Richard B. Morris (published by
Simon and Schuster, 1230 6th
Ave., New York 20) Herbert
Bayard Swope pays tribute to
the prize element of good jour-
nalism - accuracy is a priestly
mission. It has dignity. I com-
mend this book to its devotees
as a sort of Bible. It will help
those already in the ministry
and bring proselytes to the serv-
ice. And it will show why news-
paper work is so eternally and
so irresistibly seductive."
Even this powerful compliment
is mild with reference to this
great book whose contents are
described as "Literature Written
Under Pressure".
More than 170 masterpieces of
reporting are reproduced here-
starting with a witch's trial in
1587 and leading up to Lowell
Thomas, famous 1948 broadcast
of the Birth of Israel.
The explanatory notes en-
• hance the value of all the selec-
ted pieces as historical com-
mentaries. Whether it is the re-
birth of Israel, or the execution
of Sacco and Vanzetti, or Walter
Duranty's description of the
Moscow trial, or Swope's story
of the Becker case, or the mov-
ing analysis of the conviction - of
Alfred Dreyfus - the collection
of gems in this book stands out
as one of the greatest contribu-
tions to modern literature.
In the 32 pages of news photo-
graphs are included four pictures
of L'Affaire Dreyfus.
Great names and great events
are incorporated in this thrilling
book. The authentic descriptive
backgrounds of all stories, the
brilliant writing of some of the
world's beSt reporters who were
deeply ni oved by the events
they outlined, combine to forin
a great, history of 350 years of

lOurnalism.

Vocabulary, Stories in
Children's Golden . Book

"The Golden Book of Words"
by Jane Werner, with pictures
by Cornelius DeWitt, one of the
latest Simon and Schuster chil-
dren's books, is certain to gain
top position among the attrac-
tive works for the very young.
This Big Golden Book of 80
pages-all in full color-contains
37 adventure stories with a vo-
cabulary of 500 illustrated words.
Every word thus taught to the
children is presented in a label-
led drawing. All the words re-
appear in full-page action pic-
tures.. School days, birds, air--
plane rides, keeping house, look-
ing to the future, and numerous
qther stories-all well told-are
in this good book whose low
price make it valuable for per-
sonal acquisition yet make it a
worthy gift.

'Yiddish Proverbs': Vast
Storehouse of Wisdom

From the vast storehouse of
Jewish wit and wisdom, Hanan
J. Ayalti has collected numerous
wise sayings for his book "Yid-
dish P r o v e r b s", published by
Schocken Books on facing pages
in Yiddish and English.
"So many Hamans but o n e
Purim"; "a pretty face costs
money"; "a heavy-purse makes a
light heart"; "tell the truth and
you ask for a beating" - a r e
merely samples of the numerous
witty saws in this little but val-
uable book.
There is punch and wisdom in
these sayings which not only
characterize Jewish humor but
also mirror the thinking and
idealism of Jewry.

Pierre Van Paassen's reputa-
tion as a friend of the Jewish
people is ennobled by his latest
book, "Why Jesus Died" (Dial
Press, 461 4th Ave., New York
16).
Stripping the legendary story
of its myths, he repudiates the
charge that Jews were respon-
sible for the death of Jesus. He
places blame on the Romans
and accuses Zealots of having
exploited him.
Revealing an extensixe know-
ledge of the subject and an in-
timate acquaintance with t h e
Gospels, VanPaassen presents
his facts impressively, in a style
that matches the best of his
works.
Now a Unitarian minister,
VanPaassen approaches his sub-
ject with deep reverence. He ac-
knowledges that Jesus lived-
repudiating the contrary views-
but maintains that Christians,
by subconsciously hating his
teachings, give vent to tlieir
feelings through hatred for
Jews.
Jews as well as Christians will
read VanPaassen's book with a
great deal of interest. For the
former, it is a soothing docu-
ment in an era - in which
myth of the crucifixion sZ
finds ready ears.
