Frisch Charges Anti-Zionists Seek
`Regimentation, Not Americanism'

NEW YORK — Daniel Frisch,
president of the Zionist Organ-
ization of America, charged
anti-Zionists with advocating
"regimentation rather than
Americanism" in their attempt
to undermine the eforts for the
economic reconstruction of Is-
rael and for Jewish cultural re-
naissance in the United States.
In an open letter to Miss
Dorothy ThOmpson, he charac-
terized as "a bogey" and as
"pure invention"what he termed
the "canard" of dual political
allegiance leveled against Ameri-
can Zionists by her in an ad-
dress delivered under the aus-
pices of the anti-Zionist Amer-
ican Council for Judaism in
Philadelphia.
Flaying Miss T h o m p s o n's
charge that Zionism is incom-
patible with Americanism, Mr.
Frisch declared that "if this is
so, then all the presidents of the
United States, from Woodrow
Wilson to Harry S. Truman, in
addition to the late Justice
Louis D. Brandeis, were un-
American." All of them, he
said, "not only failed to see any
incompatibility between Ameri-
canism and Zionism, but actu-
ally endorsed the aims of the
Zionist movement. These en-
dorsements are a matter of
American historical record."
In his - statement, which was
directed to Miss Thompson and
to the American COuncil for
Judaism, Mr. Frisch attributed
the charge of dual allegiance to
"some vicious elements" in their
attempt to discredit the Zion-
ist movement. He charged that
anti-Zionist insistence on • the
suppression of Jewish cultural
activities under the Zionist pro-
gram is "not Americanism but
regimentation." "For American-
ism does not require the sup-
pression of culture, however Or-
igin a t e d," he said; "it connotes
the release of all potential abil-
ities of the individual and the
groups of which he is a mem-
ber. To us, unity rather than
uniformity is the aim of democ-
racy. In this framework of
American democracy there is
room, we contend, for the Jew-
ish group, along with other cul-
tural and ethnic groups, to
develop and flourish while they
are contributing to the ever-in-
creasing richness of the Ameri-
can people."

Silver Denies U.S. Zionists
Interfere in Israel Policy

Zionists in this country and
Israel "would do well" to drop
the "fictitious issue" raised by
charges that American Zionists
"are attempting to pressure the
Governmtnt of Israel through
the control of funds," Dr. Abba
Hillel Silver, former chairman
of the American section of the
Jewish Agency executive and
the American Zionist Emergency
Council, declared here.

NYU-Bellevue Institute
Receives Baruch Grant

(JTA) —Bernard
Baruch has contributed $450,000
to the New York University-
Bellevue Medical Center for its
Institute of Physical Medicine
and Rehabilitation. The an-
nouncement also revealed that
the Louis J. and Mary E. Horow-
itz Founda tions contributed
$100,000 to the Institute.
The Institute was originally
set up by a grant from the
Baruch Committee on Physical
Medicine which was established
in 1944 with a $1,100,000 grant
from Mr. Baruch. Two weeks ago,
Baruch announced that he in-
tended to leave his estate to in-
stitutions working in the field of
physical medicine and rehabili-
tation.

Allow Shanghai Jews
To Remain in Canada

MONTREAL (JTA)—The Can-

request of the Canadian Jewish
Congress to allow the Shanghai
refugees to remain in the coun-
try for another year. The ex-

Dr. Silver spoke at a $100-a-
plate dinner at which some 500
guests celebrated the •second an-
niversary of the United Nations
resolution of Nov. 29, 1947, es-
tablishing the 'state of Israel
through the partition of Pales-
tine.
"No one is trying to direct the
policies of the Government of
Israel," Dr. Silver stated, "unless
the existence of separate Zionist
parties in the United States and
elsewhere with their inherited
programs which antedated by
far the establishment of the
state, is in itself a form of in-
terference. In that case all
Zionist parties, left, right, and
center, should be abolished."
The Zionist Organization of
America, Dr. Silver explained,
has always insisted upon a de-
cisive constitutional separation
between the Government of Is-
rael and the Jewish Agency of
the World Zionist Movement.

Air Operation Brings
2,000 Iranian Jews
To Haven in Israel

TEL AVIV, (JTA)—More than
2,000 Jews have been evacuated
from Iran to Israel by air re-
cently. The operation has been
carried o u t by large trans-
oceanic Skymaster planes car-
rying 60 passengers non-stop
between Teheran and Lydda
four or five times a week.
One Teheran Jew who recent-
ly arrived said that the Iranian
government wants all foreign
Jews to leave the country.
About 5,000 Jews are now in
Iran, including those from Po-
land, India and Iraq. Itzhak
Raphael, head of the Jewish
agency's immigration depart-
ment, said that his division was
ready to provide - additional
planes and facilities for expe-
diting the Jewish evacuation
from Iran, if the need should
arise.
(The Iranian Ambassador in
Washington confirmed reports
of Iranian expUlsion of Iraqi
Jews. Because Iraq persecuted
Iranian businessmen, Iran is re-
taliating by the expulsion of
1,500 Iraqi nationals, 1,470 of
whom are Jews, Iranian Ambas-
sador Hussein Ala admitted.
The Ambassador pointed out
that the "retaliation move" was
not aimed against Jews but
against Iraqi nationals living in
Iran and that it was coinciden-
tal that the great majority af-
fected were Jewish. He said
that expelled Jews would not be
forced to go back to Iraq but
would be free to emigrate to
Israel.)

UJA Asks Bank
Loans for Israel

NEW YORK (JTA) — T h e
United 'Jewish Appeal dis-
closed that 5,600 Jewish com-
munities throughout the
country had been requested
to begin preparations to meet
needs in Israel and other
parts of the world through
their 1950 campaigns for the
UJA. The announcement said
the communities were asked
to borrow large sums of
money from banks and other
financial institutions for im-
mediate transmittal to t h e
Appeal in advance of cam-
paign collections.
Henry Morgenthau, Jr.,
general chairman of the UJA,
reported that the most urgent
problem confronting U J A
beneficiary agencies, and the
one that will require the larg-
est fund immediately, is the
care and settlement of 90,000
newcomers to Israel "w .h o
are crowded into tents and
barracks at primitive recept-
i it centers." Morgenthau
warned that this situation
has become "so critical that
a minimum of $4,000,000 must
be spent monthly by the Jew-
ish Agency" to care for the
new immigrants.
