Friends of Hebrew U.
Reelect Dr. Wechsler

Among those whom HIAS
(Hebrew Immigrant Aid So-
ciety) has been able to assist
in leaving Romania is CHAJA
GRAFF, 73, whose fading eyes
are dimmed with tears of hap-
piness as she embraces her
son, MAX GRAFF, for the
first time in 40 years, on her
arrival in New York. Mr. Graff
immigrated to the United
States with an uncle in 1909,
leaving his mother in Ro-
mania. Mrs. Graff arrived in
time to plan for the celebra-
tion of the birth of her great-
granchild in November.

Refugee Biologist Finds
Third Sex Phenomenon

NEW YORK,

(JTA)—Dr. Paul
B. Weisz, 28-year-old refugee
from Austria serving as assist-
ant professor of biology at
Brown University, Providence,
R. I., has discovered what may
roughly be termed a third sex-
protozoa in which three cells
take part simultaneously in the
fusion of nuclei.
It was learned here that Peter
B. Kenen, 17-year-old son of
Isaiah L. Kenen, Director of
Information for Israel in this
country, and Michael Hollander,
15-year-old son of Dr. Franklin
Hollander of Mt. Sinai Hospital,
made the same discovery almost
a year ago but did not realize its
significance. The discovery was
termed by Brown University of-
ficials as of fundamental im-
portance.

NEW YORK, (JTA)—Dr. Isra-
el S. Wechsler was reelected
president of the American
Friends of the Hebrew Univer-
sity at the organization's annual
meeting. Justice Felix Frank-
furter, Dr. A. S. W. Rosenbach
and Mrs. Felix M. Warburg were
elected honorary presidents.
The Hebrew University, ac-
cording to a report by the ex-
ecutive vice-p r e s i d en t, High
Salpeter, has set a goal of
$2,800,000 for its operations dur-
ing the year 1949-50, and the
American Friends will be re-
sponsible for raising $2,100,000
of that amount.
The new academic year of -
Hebrew University will record a
total enrollment of 1,300, which
is 400 more than the student
body last year.

Cook Charts Are Popular

"The Cook Charts"' are not
books, yet they were published
by Simon and Schuster and are
making a hit.
They can not be placed on
book shelves, but they can be
hung as guides for housewives.
"The Cook Charts" contain
facts and figures for simple
cooking and the housewife can
be guided by them instead of
being compelled to thumb
through cook books.
Simon and Schuster have
thus introduced another innova-
tion which promises to become
a "best seller."
