Hebrew University Friends Here
To Renew Detroit Interest in School

Three spokesmen for the
American Friends of the He-
brew University in JerUsalem
are guests here in an effort to
renew Detroit's interest in and
support for the great university
In Israel.
High Salpeter, executive vice
president; David Goldberg, di-
rector of organization and slur
dent adviser, and Reynold Herz,
director of community relations,
expressed the hope that Detroit
this year will again take its
rightful place among the -large
communities which are sup-
porting the Hebrew University.
Herz pointed out that De-
troit's last contributions to the
Hebrew University were made
from Allied Jewish Campaign
funds in 1946. In 1947 the He-
brew University was included in
the United Jewish Appeal, but
Detroit has not given financial
aid to the university in 1948 and
1949, according to Herz, who
stated: "Detroit is the only ma-
jor Jewish community in Ameri-
ca which has not supported the
Hebrew University in the last
two years."
The budget of the unisversity
for 1949-1950 is $2,800,000, to
which the Jews of \America are
asked to subscribe $2,100,000, Sal-
peter said. He reported that the
university has a deficit of $264,-
800 for 1948-49 and has an ac-
cumulated deficit of $714,000' as
of Sept. 30, 1949.
"It is our hope that Detroit
will help us reduce the deficit
and will assist in keeping the
university going," he stated.
Goldberg reported that the
Hebrew University reopened its
activities on Nova 21 with a stu-
dent enrollment of 1,300 — 400
more than in any previous year.
There are 35 American students.
The university functions in 20
buildings in the New Jerusalem,
with headquarters in the Terra
Sancta Building.
The new law department,
which was introduced at the re-
quest of the Israel government,
opened last Sunday with Dr.
Nathan Feinberg as dean. The
