Battle Over Jerusalem Underway at UN;
Sharett Arrives to Assert Israel's Stand

The demands made by the Cardinals, Archbishops and
Bishops of the Roman Catholic hierarchy in the United
States, in a statement issued in Washington, for the inter-
nationalization of Jerusalem "and its environs" has definite-
ly placed the Catholic church on the battlefront against the
Jewish position. The Vatican has for some time been the

that the Tnuat Hamoshavim
movement was concerned over
the possibilities of an internal
opposition viewpoint developing
among its_settlers, and that the
movement was not prepared to
"encourage infiltration of dis-
turbing elements."
Earlier, a sharp exchange de-
velOped between Premier David
Ben Gurion and another Com-
munist deputy, Tewfik Tuby, an
Arab. The Communist demand-
ed a parliamentary investigation
into charges of alleged cruelty
and misbehavior on the part of
Israel troops who carried out
searches for Arab infiltrees in
Arab villages throughout Galilee.
Ben Gurion opposed the mo-
tion, asserting that the Arab
deputy was attempting "to slan-
der the Israel Army" and cover
up incitement against the gov-
ernment. He also stated that
similar charges raised by the
same deputy previously had
proven false. The motion was
defeated.
Fifty Arab infiltrees were
rounded up and arrested in the
Arab village of Tarshima during
recent searches, it was an-
nounced here. On the outskirts
of Petach Tikvah a farmer ex-
changed shots with infiltrees.
A wounded Arab was found on
the, property and a Sten gun
was discovered a short distance
away.

Israel Asks UN to Reject

—American rejection of the
Arab bid for arms aid, allegedly
to fight Communism, was broad-
ly hinted by George C. McGhee,
Assistant Secretary of State for
Near Eastern Affairs, in an 'ad-
dress before the national con-
vention of Young Democratic
Clubs.
. Mr. McGhee said that the Near
Eastern Problems "are not the
result of Communist influence,
and that their solution does not
lie in the strengthening of the
military forces of the Near East-
ern states, or in their defense
against Soviet encroachment."

Proposed Holy Places Plot

LAKE SUCCESS, (JTA)—The
delegation of Israel called upon
the UN General Assembly to re-
ject as "unjust and unrealistic"
the Palestine Counciliation Com-
mission's plan to internationa-
lize the Jerusalem area. At the
same time Israel offered to enter
into international agreements
with the United Nations to en-
sure the safety and immunity
of the Holy Places in Jerusalem
and to guarantee religious
rights, with UN representation
for.that purpose.
The delegation submitted a
35-page section-by-section an-
alysis of the Commission's draft
instrument to the Ad Hoes Politi-
cal Committee. The Commis-
sion's view that the plan does
not affect the existing govern-
mental authority of Israel over
the Jewish area of Jerusalem is
rejected, the memorandum as-
serted, adding that under the
plan the Israel Government
would not retain in Jewish Jeru-
salem "a fraction of the normal.
functions_ and authority which
any ordinary government exer-
cises in any area under its juris-
.
diction."

A representative gathering of Detroit Jews on Monday
evening, at a meeting arranged by the Zionist Council and
the Jewish Community Council, unanimously approved reso-
lutions calling upon President Truman and the U. S. delega-
tion to the UN to oppose any effort to subject the Jewish
city of Jerusalem and its 100,000 inhabitants to UN rule.
The resolutions declare that Jerusalem must remain an in-
separable part of Israel.
Sidney Shevitz presided at the meeting, at Central High
School auditorium. Addresses were delivered by Ezra Sha-
piro of Cleveland, Rabbi Isaac Stollman and Philip Slomo-
vitz. A musical program was given by Cantor Hyman Adler,
with Bella Goldberg at the piano.

Four-Point Program

Stating that this was the first
time in history that a govern-
ment in control of part of Jeru-
salem had offered to bind itself
by international agreements ac-

Knesset Deputy Attacks
Reds As Anti-Zion:sts

•

TEL AVIV (JTA) — Charges
that settlers with "Communist
inclinations" have been expelled
from Tnuat Hamoshavim, small-
holders settlements, were made
in the Knesset by Communist
deputy Shmuel Mikunis who de-
manded that the Parliament
appoint an investigating com-
mittee to check his charges. His
request was denied following a
statement by Mapai deputy
Shmuel Dayan who insisted that
the matter did not pertain either
to the Knesset or the Israel Gov-
ernment as a whole. He sug-
gested that Mikunis' complaint
be taken to the Jewish Agency
or the Jewish National Fund—
the settlement authorities.
Dayan attacked the Commun-
ists as "anti-Zionists' and - as-
serted that they were not en-
titled to assistance for settle-
ment purposes. He also stated
