UNAUTHORIZED SOLICITA -

TION of funds through boxes in
the community is a bigger rack-
et than folks realize . • . and
something should be done to
put it under control . . . A few
pennies here and there add up
fast . . . and there are enough
suckers around to foster it as
big business ... Our community
agencieS upon whom we look for
guidance should instigate a
campaign to clean up this mess.
* * *
A COUPLE OF "workers" have
been making the rounds of
establishments . . . with a box
that has no lettering on it . . .
colored blue on one side,
white on the other . . . The
solicitors rant in Yiddish if
asked what the money is for .
As far as is known, these
boxes do not represent any au-
thorized charitable group . . .
Beware of boxes with non-ex-
isting organizations named on
labels.

MONTE KORN, chairman of
Masada's "Millionaires Party"
Nov. 27 . . at UDW Hall on
Second and Midland . . . has
committee consisting of board
members working twice as hard
to make the fund-raising affair
a success . . . Masada has com-
mitted itself to a named sum
for Israel . . . and must make it
through this shindig.

CONVALESCING AT THE
Providence Hospital from in-
juries sustained in an automo-
bile accident, Mrs. Julius Goode
received unexpected company
when a youthful stranger wan-
dered through the open door
and into her room . . . "Hello,"
said the lad, obviously no more
than four or five years old.
"How long have you been here?"
• . • Mrs. Goode told him two
weeks . . . and the lad asked,
"Let me see your baby." . . .
Mrs. Goode replied that she
hadn't a baby . . . "Gee, you're
Slow," said the youngster. "My
mother's been here just two
days and she's got one."
* * *
OLD FOLKS HOME purchased
Talmudic sketches that have
been framed and hung up in
the corridors ... They are beau-
tiful studies,'but the men in the
Home are beefing to Director
Ira Sonnenblick about them be-
ing exhibited . . . "We see a lot
of old people here. everyday,"
say the aged gents. "Why don't
we get pictures of Esther Wil-
hams and the likes of her!"
* * *
CALL FOR HELP . . . is put
out by Pisgah Women of Bnai
Brith . . They are desperately
in need of a sewing machine ...
to use in piecing together linens
for cancer pads . . . If you have
a machine lying around unused
. . . or know of one they can
get . . . here's an opportunity to
perform a worthy deed that will
help further the wonderful work
of these grand ladieS . . . To
date, they have already made
well. over 16,000 pads for the
American Cancer Society in
Detroit . . . Contact Mrs. Sam
Gold, president of the group,
and arrangements will be made
to pick up the sewing machine
. . Your kindness will not go
unappreciated . . . believe us!
* * *
MANY FOLKS WILL be happy
to learn that local friends,
Harry and Ida Silverman, have
opened a modern delicatessen
and grill in Pontiac, Mich. . . .
The place is called "Rhimes"
and is located at 67 W. Huron
St. . . Harry and Ida had the
eatery at the Greyhound Depot
in South Haven . . . and served
the best gol-durned food in
town . . . Ida's private recipe
for making coffee is still the
best! ... Best of luck to a couple
of swell people.

during his stay at the Palladium
. . . "Great!" said Buddy. "When
the English audience hears a
joke it laughs first to be polite

it hears others laugh . . . then
it laughs a third time when It
gets the point of the story."

SOME YEARS AGO, an ob-
viously down-and-out gent walk-
ed into Jack Citron's Washing-
ton Blvd. haberdashery . . .
Slightly embarrassed, he asked
for a clean shirt ... to help him
get a job . . . Noticing his good
manners and otherwise neatness,
Jack gave the fellow a. new white
shirt to replace the dark-colored
and much frayed one he was
wearing . . . "I'll be back to pay
you!" cried the man. "Believe
me, I'll be back to pay you!"
Muttering thanks as he went
out, the fellow left . . . By the
time he was out the door, Jack
had forgotten the incident ever
happened.
* * *
LAST WEEK, exactly five years
later, Jack was waiting on a
customer . . . When he had fin-
ished and was adding the total
of the sale, the customer said,
"Haven't you forgotten some-
thing?" . . . Jack made doubly
sure of the total and replied, "No,
I've got everything down here."
... The customer took his brief
case from the floor . . . opened
it up . . . and pulled out an
old white shirt . . . "You forgot
to include this," he exclaimed
... "or don't you remember giv-
ing me this shirt. I told you I'd
be back someday to pay you."
The man is now executive sales
director for one of the leading
appliance lines in the Mid-West.

Thirty-two Detroit organiza-
tions have heard speakers from
the Women's Division of the
Jewish Welfare Federation plead
for housing in behalf of the re-
fugee families who are arriving
in Detroit at a rate of 20 to 30
monthly. The speakers are
working in cooperation with the
Resettlement Service.
Apartments, flats or even sin-
gle rooms can be utilized by the
Resettlement Service for these
families, whose paramount need
is housing. The agency pays all
rentals of the people in its care
until they are fully settled and
able to meet their own expenses.
Anyone knowing of accomoda-
tions that are vacant now or
that will be vacant is urged to
call Esther Adler at Resettle-
ment Service, TR. 2-4080.
