`Sword in the Dessert, First Hollywood
Film on Israel, Being Shown in Detroit

.

"Sword in the Desert," the first full-length feature film
on Israel to come out of Hollywood, is now at the Adams
Theater. In the scene, pictured_here, fallen comrade JEFF
CHANDLER struggles as DANA ANDREWS and MARTA
TOREN, as members of the Israeli underground, fight off the
British who surprise them with a van of illegal immigrants.
The film will remain at the Adams as long as public demand
lasts.

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. — A
planned schedule of activities
will get under way at the GROS-
SINGER-PANCOAST Hotel, here,
Dec. 10, when the hostelry opens
for the 1949-50 season, managing
director Paul Grossinger dis-
closed. Included in the program
will be variety shows featuring
Broadway and Hollywood enter-
tainers, prominent speakers,
book reviews, motion pictures,
after-dinner concerts, sports ex-
hibitions and other events.

Petitions reaffirming the So.r.
cial Service Employees Union's
drive to raise salaries have been
signed by approximately three-
fours of the employees of Fam-
ily Service Society, Jewish Com-
munity Center, Jewish Social
Service Bureau and Community
Information Service, the union
announced.
Photostated copies were sent
to Noble D. TraVis, Morris Gar-
vett, Dr. Ltawrence Seltzer and
William Brown, presidents of
the boards of directors of the ,
agencies.
The Social Service Union is
demanding (1) an increase of
$10 a week for all employees of
Detroit private social agencies
in order to correct the depressed
salary situation existing in De-
troit under the present Council
of Social Agencies salary plan.
Samuel Neuschatz, chairman
of the union's strategy com-
mittee, pointed out that a recent
survey revealed that the wage
level for all employees of Detroit
private social agencies are. ap-
proximately $1,000 below the
average for similar positions in
public agencies in this city.
