Nazis' Literary Loot
To Go To Libraries
By DR. HANNAH ARENDT
Some 50,000 Jewish books, part
of a huge- amassment of such
volumes looted by the Nazis, are
to be distributed among Jewish
libraries here by the Jewish
Cultural Reconstruction, Inc. A
token presentation to major
Jewish libraries is to be made
during Jewish Book Month, Nov.
11 to Dec. 11.
Some time in 1945, not long
after the Allied Armies had be-
gun their occupation of Ger-
many, an American soldier lit-
erally stumbled over a pile of
books in a Frankfurt-am-Main
cellar. The soldier's discovery
was the first trace of the more
than three million volumes
which have since been dug up
in Various caches in Germany.
Immediately after the out-
break of the war, the Nazi gov-

the "Study of the Jewish Ques-
tion."
Early in 1946, the American
authorities decided to collect all
books which had turned up in
the American zone and stored
them in the city of Offenbach,
where a five-story building was
assigned for this purpose. A few
months later, the Allied authori-
ties began to return books to
the institutitions which had sur-
vived the war. • This huge op-
eration, involving one million
books from European and 700,-

tutions, lasted until 1947.

It is for these two categories,

the remnants of many centuries

founded.
The re-allocation of these
books was begun in the spring
of 1949, and remains to be com-
pleted. The main recipient was
the Hebrew University, but books

NEW YORK, Oct. 26—A rap-
idly expanding internal market,
a need for new, highly varied
industries, and a government
which recognizes the role which
private enterprise must play in
the development of the country,
makes Israel a fertile field for
private investment, declared
Robert R. :-Nathan, director of
the economic department of the
Jewish Agency for Palestine, on
his return from a three-week
visit to Israel.
Speaking at a press conference
in the Agency office in New
York, Nathan envisioned Israel
as a center for the assembly and
export of manufactured prod-
ucts. He predicted that without
exploitation of her neighbors,
Israel will spearhead the eco-

Schocken Books announces the
publication of "Yiddish Prov-
erbs," as volume 20 in the
Schocken Library Series.
The collection, edited by H.
J. Ayalti, offers a panorama of
the most expressive, most char-
acteristic Yiddish proverbs. The
volume has the original Yiddish
telt (transliterated into the
Roman alphabet) which conveys
the full flavor of the original
exression.
On facing pages the reader
finds an English translation by
Isidore Goldstick. This rendi-
tion retains as much as possible
the elements of the earthy, pop-
ular Yiddish proverb.
