(See Picture on Page One) Before 2,000 persons in the auditorium of the Northwest Synagogue on Thursday, Oct. 21, Rep. Franklin D. Roosevelt, Jr. (D.) of New York, presented his "Impressions of Israel." Brought to Detroit by the Sis- terhood and Men's Club commit- tees headed by Mrs. Ira G. Kauf- man and David B. Aaron, Roos- evelt described his talk as the objective picture of Israel re- ceived by a most interested out- sider. "You have heard in the_press and through speeches of Jewish leaders who have visited Israel, of the accomplishments and dynamic character of the Jew- ish State. As a non-Jewish Zion- ist I could look at Israel without your personal emotion; but I could not detract from the ac- complishmeni,s of Israel, or its impact on the observer." All Out for. Israel Roosevelt was moist enthusias- tic over the aggressive capability of the leaders of Israel; Ben Gurion, Sharret, Kaplan and the Jerusalem Army commander, Moishe Dayan. "I expected," he said, "to meet physical giant s, white-haired and shagy. Instead I met men . of short physical stature, and immense intellectual inspiration and ability. Men who could never surrender Israel!" Terming -Israel Democracy's outpost in the Middle E a s t, Roosevelt state, "All the Ameri- can people should go all-out to aid Israel." Williams, Brown Speak Also on the program were Gov. G. Mennen Williams and JNF Worker Addressing the Men's Club of Tempre Israel at the Hotel Stat- ler Oct. 18; Dr. S. Andhil Fine- berg, national community serv- ice director of ,the American Jewish Commitee, warned against myopia in combatting prejudice. "Everyone," said Dr. Fineberg, "is inclined to brand as bigotry all adverse statements against his own racial and religious group. But many gladly believe damaging assertions against other groups. Unless we are as skeptical toward the malicious charges against other groups as we are critical of statements which malign our own group, we cannot contribute much to the elimination of racial a n d reli- gious bigotry." - In explaining the psychological hazards which prejudice creates, Dr. Fineberg quoted from his re- cently published 000k "Punish- ment_ Without Crime." "Our thinking about wious groups 'I's crude and slot y. We regard them with an affection or with a dislike which bears no rela- tionship to real merit or de- merit." Urging that training for fair-mindedness be started as soon as a child can distinguish the meanings of "he" and "they," the speaker asserted that there can be no successful substitute for education. Prentis M. Brown, former sena- tor from Michigan and head of Detroit Edison. The Mrs. Wil- liams and Brown were intro- duced to the audience by Mrs. Kaufman. Gov. Christian Lead.ers Back Israel Rule Over Jerusalem NEW YORK (JTA—Declaring that "citizenship in the state of Israel is the inherent right of the Jews of Jerusalem," 90 Christian leader s, including prominent members of the Christian clergy in the United States, appealed to President Truman to support a policy within the United Nations which would place the administration of Jerusalem in the hands of the government of Israel. Commenting on the proposal of the UN Palestine Conciliation Commission to internatiohalize the city, the Christian leaders, in their message to the Presi- dent, was this plan was "neither desirable nor practicable." Voicing deep concern for the safeguarding of Jerusalem's Holy Places and the desirability of United Nations' control over such places, the Christian lead- ers asserted they were "con- vinced that the state and people of Israel would, in administer- ing Jerusalem, abide by the principle of freedom of religion." Lipsky Terms UN Jerusalem Plan 'Vulgar Insult to History' The proposed internationali- zation of Jerusalem was termed a "most vulgar insult to history" by Louis .Lipsky, chairman, of the American Zionist Council, at a meeting with the press on Monday. Lipsky was in Detroit to ad= dress the Max Nordau centen- nial meeting of the Zionist Or- ganization of Detroit at the Jewish Center that evening. Jerusalem cannot maintain economic independence unless it is a part of Israel, Lipsky de- clared, since its principal inter- ests ore Jewish institutions and officials of the Jewish ag'ency and Zionist organizations. He pointed out that Jerusalem has served for centuries as the Culture Program For Book Month On Nov. 13, the Joint Yiddish Culture Committee of the Jew- ish Coinmunity Council and the Jewish Coinmunity Center will ptesent a culture program ded- icated to Jewish Book Month. The noted essayist, poet and dramatist, Leivick, will appear at the Jewish Center at 8:30 p.m. Tickets will be distributed to all organizations. Further details may be obtain- ed as the Council, WO. 3-1657, or the Center, TR. 5-8400. DON'T MISS MAX LERNER symbol of the drama of Jewry's return to its homeland. Deriding the possibilities of a successful international regime in Jerusa- lem, Lipsky stated that the United Nations charter does not proyide for such instances, and has no reference to "UN citi- zens." The necessity for strengthen- ing the Zionist movement in this country, particularly to assure a steady flow of immigration to Israel, was emphasized by the AZ spokesman. "All estimates of financial needs have been broken down by the rapidity of immigration," he" said.. This ob- ligation of American Jewry is not permanent, he declared, but must be maintained at a high peak for three to five . years to "cross the hill." • He cited the recurring in- stances of pogroms in the Arab states which, at the same time, are pleading for sympathy for the Arab refugees. "The whole UN is concerned with the Arab • refugees who left Palestine vol- untarily,' Lipsky said, "but the Arab states are making life miserable for the old, establish- ed Jewish residents." •••••••••••••••••••••••10 • • • • • KEEP ASKIN' • • • RASKIN • • • SPECIAL DELUXE • • • CREAM COTTAGE • • e • • an and SPECIAL : • FARMER CIFIEESE i : it.......T .
