TEL AVIV—Arab radio stations
broadcasting from countries sur-
rounding Israel have started a
psyChological warfare campaign
depicting in blackest terms the
conditions under which new
immigrants to Israel live, and
presenting exaggerated reports,
on the number of immigrants
who want to leave the country.
A recent 24-hour monitoring
report of Arab stations prepared
by the Official Information
Service here revealed that the
Cairo, Bagdad, Beirut and Ra-
mallah stations are broadcast-
ing almost identical commen-
taries on "discontent" among
the new immigrants.
Report Discontent
Radio Cairo, for example, re-
cently reported : that "discon-
tented immigrants who arrived
in Israel from North Africa are
being sent back at a cost of $200
per person." Officials say that
less than 300 North African Jews
have left the country in the past
year. Radio Cairo also broad-
cast that "large-scale demon-
strations of North African Jews
took place recently to protest
against unsanitary living con-
ditions in the reception camps
and the death of 15 newcomers."
As all the radio stations in
the Arab countries are govern-
ment-controlled and operated,
the campaign is officially spon-
sored. Radio Ramallah is located
near Jerusalem, and is operated
by Transjordan authorities.
The commentaries are gener-
ally based on the inability -of the
new Jewish state to take care of
and handle the wave of mass
immigration. From that angle,
the Arab countries would appear
to be counteracting their own

propaganda concerning t h e
Palestine Arab refugees, which
has always insisted on the re-
turn of all the refugees to their
homes in Israel.
Cyprus Radio Distortions
The Cyprus station, particul-
arly in the Arabic broadcasts,
has taken a consistently anti-
Israel line, and officials here,
who have been inclined to be-
lieve that British policy toward
the new state was changing, are
puzzled by this new attempt to
distort the picture.
Jews who have arrived here in
the past year have expressed a
desire to return to the countries
of their origin, and the North
African Jews who have come_
are disturbed more by their fail-
ure to find employment than
they are about unsanitary con-
ditions in the camps.
Thus far there has been no
official protest to the British
representatives here, although
the attitude of the Cyprus sta-
tion has been - informally point-
ed out to them by Israel offici-
als. There has not been any at-
tempt to analyze the reasons
for the new campaign of psy-
chological warfare over the air.

HIAS Ups Aid Fund;
Handles MOre - Cases

.

NEW YORK—The Hebrew Im-
migrant Aid Society (HIAS), 425

Lafayette St., allocated an ad-
ditional $500,000 for sheltering
and . feeding newly-arrived im-
migrants during , the next 6
months. Temporary sheltering
of immigrants at ports of debar-
kation has increased sharply,
Isaac L. Asofsky, HIAS executive
director explained.
In a nine-months report sent
to world headquarters of HIAS,
the society's director in Poland,
reported that his staff is con-
tinuing to process Jewish emi-
gration cases, and that the
pending case load has risen to
4,146. HIAS offices are still
functioning in Warsaw, Lodz,
Cracow and Wroclaw.
