JDC to Require
$45,000,000 for
Program in 1950

PARIS — (J T A ) — The Joint
Distribution Committee will re-
quire an "absolute minimum" of
$45,000,000 to conduct its pro-
grams in 1950, it was reported
following the conclusion of the
week-long conference here of
JDC director in 18 European
and North African countries.
According to Dr. Joseph J.
Schwartz, JDC European direc-
tor, the agency will have four
principal tasks next year. These
are:
1. Emigration to Israel, the
United States and other lands
of a minimum of 100,000 per-
sons.
2. Medical aid, food relief and
other assistance to Jews of
North Africa and other Moslem
areas.
3. Care for the "hard core"
group of aged, sick and disabled
Jews in Ettrope and Israel.
4. Helping the remaining Jew-
ish communities in Europe to be
self supporting.
• The_ first unified campaign to
raise funds in France for local
Jewish needs Will begin Oct. 22,
under the direction of an
American member of the JDC.
On the subject of immigration,
Dr. Schwartz said future new
settlers for Israel would come
mainly from North Africa and
other Moslem regions, since the
displaced persons camps of cen-
tral Europe were rapidly being
emptied and some governments
of Eastern Europe had taken a
negative position of permitting
their Jewish national to leave
for Israel.

TEL AVIV (JTA)—A new deep

on the coast between Jaffa and
Tel Aviv at an estimated cost of
$33,600,000, Tel Aviv Mayor Is-

meeting of the Marine Trust
Limited which operates the port
of Tel Aviv.
It was decided to adopt a plan
which calls for the reclamation
of a seaboard strip facing the
Marshyia quarter, he reported.
Besides the cost of construction
of quays and breakwaters, it will
be necessary to add another
$22,000,000 for reclamation of
the marsh area.

Israel's austerity program, is one for the books . . Steaks
and other meats are as scarce as ice cream in the Sahara Desert.
. . However, the strict rationing program introduced by Minister
of Supplies Dov Joseph is good meat to the gagsters . . . The
restaurant menu is popularly described as "Joseph's fairy tale."
. .. Before the holidays the jokesters spread a rumor that Joseph
was thinking of changing the Jewish calendar . . . He would
have Yom Kippur extended to two days and thus have • two fast
days . .. Another story is about a movement to sell 20th Century
Israel's Joseph to Egypt . . . Two men sitting in a restaurant
over a meatless table discuss religion . . . One remarks that
Joseph is the molt religious man in Israel .. . This of course
elicits an expression of surprise . . . Surprise gives way to laugh-
ter when the other replies: "Mosaic law requires a waiting period
of six hours between eating meat and dairy products while Joseph
requires six days."
