Solemn Services Tonight Usher in New Year
Rabbis Announce Rosh Hashanah Sermon Topic

Worshippers will gather in all temples and synagogues
this Friday evening, for the solemn services which usher in
the Jewish New Year. Rosh Hashanah rites will continue on
Saturday morning in Reform temples and on Saturday eve-
ning and Sunday morning in Conservative and Orthodox
congregations.

At Bnai David, Elmhurst at
14th, evening services begin at 6,
and morning services at 8. On
Saturday morning, Rabbi Joshua
Sperka will preach on "Can You
Tell Time?" His topic on Sun-
day will be "Rosh Hashanah,
An Answer to Disturbed Souls."
Rabbi Morris Adler and Dr.
Moshe Davis will alternate in
preaching at the main auditor-
ium and social hall services at
Shaarey Zedek. On Saturday,
Rabbi Adler's topic will be "A
Religion for the Mature," and
Dr. Davis will speak on "How
Can Parents and Children Keep
in Step with One Another?"
For Sunday, Dr. Davis has an-
nounced "The New Meaning of
Diaspora Judaism" for his ser-
mon, while Rabbi Adler's sub-
ject is "The Art of Jewish Liv-
ing". Guest cantor for the Holy
Days is Rev. Phillip Blackman,
who will alternate with Cantor
Jacob Sonenklar. Dan Frohman
conducts the Shaarey Zedek
Choir.
Youth and children's services
will be conducted at 10:30 a.m.
in the prayer room and Kate
Frank Memorial Chapel. Adult
services will commence at 5:45
p.m. and at 8:15 a.m.
Sermons at Beth Aaron
Rabbi Pinchos Katz will be
assisted by Max Kaminsky, Isaac
Henig and Dr. Marvin Last in
conducting services at Cong.
Beth Aaron. The services sched-
ule is 6 p.m. and 7:30 a.m. Rab-
bi Katz' Rosh Hashanah sermon
topics include "A Talmudic and
Rabbinic Interpretation - of Rosh
Hashanah" and "The Ancient
Call of the Shofar to Us."
A newly-formed high school
choir, under the direction of Mrs.
Jason Tick•on, will be heard at
the Temple Beth El children's
service at 2:30 p.m. Saturday.
The service will be conducted
by the following members of the
confirmation class: Carole Gold-
stein, Elizabeth Meyer, Richard
Peritz and Evelyn Rogoff.
Adult evening services at Beth
El will be conducted on a double
schedule with members whose
names begin with letters A
through K worshiping at the 7
p.m. service and letters L
through Z at the 9 p.m. service.
Dr. B. Benedict Glazer will
preach at the early evening and
morning services, and Rabbi Sid-
ney Akselrad at the late evening
, rites.
Rabbi Robert P. Jacobs of St.
Louis will officiate at services
for non-members in the Brown
Memorial Chapel.
Downtown Services
Cong. Beth - Jacob will hold
Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kip-
pur ,services at the English Room
of the Park Ave. Hotel. The pub-
lic is invited to these services,
according to Abe. Ackerman,
president.
Cong. Beth Tefilo Emanuel's
service schedule is 6 p.m. and 8
a.m. Rabbi M. J. Wohlgelernter
will preach on Saturday. Sabbath
T'Shuvo services are set for 6
p.m. Friday, Sept. 30, and 9 a.m.
Saturday, Oct. 1.

gen Abraham, Dexter at Cort-
land. The 6 p.m. and 8 a.m.
schedule also holds true, as do

At Sabbath of Repentance
rites Sept. 30, Rabbi Frani will
preach on "The Meaning of Re-
pentance for Modern Man."
Cantor Miklos Fenakel will of-
ficiate at services at the North-
west Hebrew Congregation at 6
p.m. and at 7:30 a.m. Rabbi Ja-
cob Segal will preach. Auxiliary
services will be conducted in the
chapel by Arthur Hollander of
the Jewish Theological Seminary,
assisted by Rev. Joshua Spiro.
Special services for boys and
girls 7 to 17 and a junior con-
gregation service also are being
arranged. They will begin at
9:30 a. m. Saturday and Sunday.
Sam Kaner, junior congregation
adviser, will supervise, assisted
by Bobby Dunsky, Earl Jacobs,
Gearld Loomus and Seymour
Mandell.
Six p.m. and 3:30 a.m. are the
hours of services at Cong. Shaar-
ey Zion. 12353 Linwood. Rabbi
Leo Goldman will preach on
Saturday. Cantor Louis Zusmann
of Cleveland will conduct serv-
ices.
At Cong. Adas Yeshurun, 2625
Tyler, services are scheduled at
6 p.m. and at 8:30 a.m. Rabbi
Leo Goldman will speak on Sun-
day. Cantor I. Davis of Toronto
will conduct the services.

800 Children Begin
Temple Israel Classes

Over eight hundred boys and
girls ranging from four to 18,
were enrolled in the religious
school classes of Temple Israel
last week. The older boys and
