Sabbath in Israel

TEL AVIV—It is customary
for the Orthodox in a number
of Israeli towns to remind the
inhabitants of closing time on
Friday afternoon -by blowing
horns or in periods of air raid
alerts, when this might cause
confusion—tinkling bells in the
streets. Local by-laws every-
where require the • closing of
bussinesses — except for restau-
rants and other vital services—
on Sabbath and other major
holidays. As most cities also
have by-laws prohiting bus traf-
fic on such days, somewhat cost-
lier "taxi services," licensed in
Tel Aviv and environs, are very
popular.
Extremes are illustrated by
the fact that Haifa buses run
almost all year round, while
Jerusalem religious quarter s
close their streets to holiday
traffic of any kind by stretching
chains fastened to permanent
poles cemented into the side-
walks across the roads. Public
bulletin boards sometimes carry
posters inviting persons to par-
ticipate in Saturday h i k i n g,
cycling and driving tours as well
as others announcing that a
group of houses a few hundred
metres distant is out of .bounds
—for those who care—because
damaged Eruv markings have
not yet been restored.

As a result of the activities of
a Committee for Sabbath Ob-
servance every announcement
posted by public museums car-
ries a line informing prospective
Saturday visitors that they must
prepare tickets in advance. This
;rule, if implemented, would close
publicly-owned galleries to all
people unable to work out a
Saturday time-table in advance
for themselves and their friends
and find time during the week
to procure tickets. No wonder
that sports associations, mu- -
seums, restaurants, etc., more or
less openly contravent their own •
announcements.

There exists also the problem
of Sabbath and holiday observ-
ance in state-operated services.
The Mizrachi Minister of Immi-
gration has prohibited the land-
ing of immigrants on Sabbaths,
a n d government offices are :
closed as a matter of course,
leaving only emergency staffs on
duty. But the interruption of
rail, port and similar services,
demanded by the zealous, pre-
sents a much tougher problem.
There is the question of corn-
munications with other coun-
tries, and it is also a fact that '
non-Jewish residents of Israel
must be permittted to observe
their own Sabbath.
As a result, the Knesset sits I
only four days a week, but it is
hardly feasible to carry this
practice into any other field or
to force non-Jewish citizens to
stay in their houses on the I
Jewish Sabbath for lack of any
means of communication and
other amenities.
- The practical impossibility of
rigid codification in this field,
where the regard for the relig-
ious freedom of non-Jews plays
into the hands of non-observent
Jews, will safeguard considerable
freedom of movement for all in-
habitants.

Yehudi Menuhin Revises
YomKippurConcertPlan

LONDON, Sept.'8.1— (JTA) —
Yehudi Menuhin, .world-re-
nowned Jewish violinist who was
scheduled to play Yom Kippur
eve at a concert for the benefit
of the Motor and Cycle Trades
Benevolent Fund here, will per-
form instead in the afternoon
preceding the beginning of the
holiest day in the Jewish cal-
endar.
- J. F. Slaughter, chairman of
',the Fund, said Mr. Menuhin's
contract had been altered out
of respect to "his strong religi-
ous feeling and his feeling for
the Jewish people generally."

Each day begins at East cape.
the easternmost extremity of
Siberia, before iL dawns at any
other place.
