Ussishkin League Starts
National Insurance Drive

The National Ussishkin Lea-
gue, Zionist honor society whose
members take out life insurance
policies designating the Jewish
National Fund as the irrevocable
beneficiary, has launched a na-
tionwide campaign to secure a
large amount of insurance poli-
cies, according to Dr. Harris J.
Levine, president.
Named for the late Menahem
Ussishkin, guiding spirit behind
the JNF for more than three de-
cades, the League offers to Zion-
ists an opportunity to perpetu-
ate their work in the soil of
ISrael.
Dr. Levine said that efforts
will now be undertaken to en-
ldrge the scope of the League.
Plans include formation of Lea-
Ole chapters in major Jewish
communities in the United
States. Judge Morris Rothenberg,
president of the Jewish National
Find of America, has • accepted
hOnorary chairManship of this
League. Mendel N. Fisher is sec-
raary and Abraham Krumbein,
treasurer. Fred Gahan is na-
tional director of the League.

need help in reestablishing
themselves as self-supporting
members of the community.
The plight of Jewish war or-
phans in France motivated one
of the projects of the Temple
Emanuel Sisterhood in Montreal.
Most of the 325 members began
making clothing, which was
shipped to youngsters at a home
in Les Glycenes, near Paris.
All of the Sisterhoods have a
keen interest in education, but
few of them have initiated an
undertaking as unusual as that
of Temple Israel Sisterhood in
Johannesburg, Union of South
Africa. In January, S. P. Lee,
mayor of Johannesburg, offi-
cially opened the - "Jabulani
(Place of Happiness) . Primary
School for African Children in
Alexandria Township" before a
gathering of distinguished
guests. To the 86 members of
the Temple Israel Sisterhood,
the ceremonies marked a . mile-
stone in the history of their
favorite project, which began' in
August, 1945, when the Sister-
hood decided to do something
about the lack of adequate edu-
cational facilities in the Union
for native children. (Of Alexan-

dra Township's 24,000 children
of school age, only 8,000 attend
school). A small cottage was
rented and converted into a
schoolhouse, a teacher was hired,
and 36 native children were en-
rolled.
Since then the Sisterhood has
spent some £6000 on the school
and has moved it into larger
quarters twice. Today, 200
youngsters are enrolled in the
present building.
The National Federation of
Temple Sisterhoods is the wom-
en's division of the Union of
American Hebrew Congregations -
and an affiliate of the World
Union for Progressive Judaism.

JERUSALEM (MNB) — Rabbi
S. D. Kahane, rabbi of the Old
City of Jerusalem, has issued
an appeal to all American re-
ligious Jewish communities, urg-
ing them to refrain from buying
Torah scrolls which were re-
cently looted from old syna-
gogues in the Holy City by Arab
gangs.
The Mizrachi News Bureau
recently reported that Arab
thieves had stolen two scrolls
from the ancient Churvah Syna-
gogue, and were attempting to
sell them to a New York syna-
gogue for a minimum of $40,000.
According to the Deputy
Mayor of Jerusalem, Mr. Elm-
aleh, who is an authority on an-
cient Hebrew manuscripts, "no
Scroll in any Jerusalem syna-
gogue is older than 90 years and
would not be worth more than
$400 each."
